Understand the Drain System
Identify single vs. dual drain, main drain line routing, hydrostatic valve or plug, drain pot type, and whether the drain is active or abandoned. Know the equipment valve layout.
Inspect the Drain Area
Inspect the cover, screws, drain frame, drain pot, plaster condition, cracks, hydrostatic valve or plug, and any prior repair material. Document condition before any cover removal.
Dye Test the Drain Area
With pump off and water completely still, dye test around the drain pot, hydrostatic valve, plug, drain-to-shell joint, and any nearby cracks. A steady dye pull into a defect indicates active water movement.
Pressure Test the Line When Indicated
If the suction line is suspected after inspecting and dye testing the drain area, pressure test the main drain circuit. A failed line test requires interpretation -- bad plugs or valve leakage can create false results.
