When a pool has an elevated spa, water naturally seeks to equalize between the two bodies. If the isolating valve or check valve between the spa and pool is faulty, partially open, or leaking past the seat, water flows from the higher elevation (spa) toward the lower elevation (pool) through the plumbing connection. Dye testing looks like the simplest thing in pool leak detection. Drop some dye, watch it move, call the leak. That is not how it works in the field.

The false positive problem is real. I have seen experienced technicians confidently call a leak near a spa return -- and be completely wrong because water was traveling between the spa and pool through a faulty check valve. I have seen beginners call leaks that were nothing more than natural water oscillation in a plumbing line that they had never seen before.
