How Does Pressure Testing Work in Pool Leak Detection?

Pressure testing turns a hidden plumbing problem into something measurable. You cannot see underground pipe -- so you isolate it, seal it, add controlled pressure, and watch the gauge.

A failed pressure test confirms which line has a problem. It does not automatically show where the break is. Finding the exact location requires additional methods -- acoustic listening, pipe locating, or visual confirmation.

What Pressure Testing Does

Pool plumbing is buried underground, under decks, inside walls, or behind the pool shell. You usually cannot see the pipe. Pressure testing gives the technician measurable evidence about what is happening inside lines that cannot be seen.

Pressure testing is commonly used on skimmer lines, main drain lines, return lines, cleaner lines, spa suction lines, spa jet lines, and water feature lines.

What It Tells You -- and What It Does Not

A passing pressure test means that specific line held pressure during that test -- not that the entire pool has no leak. The leak may still be structural, at a light niche, at a skimmer body, or in a different plumbing line. Pressure testing is one part of the investigation, not the whole investigation.

The Pressure Testing Process -- Step by Step

Identify the line being tested

Know the plumbing layout before testing anything. Trace the line from the pool to the equipment pad. Understand what it connects to and how it is isolated.

Seal the line with test plugs

Insert removable expanding plugs at the pool end and isolate the equipment end. The line must be fully sealed before any pressure is introduced. A poor seal creates false results.

Connect the pressure testing rig

Connect the pressure manifold to the line. The manifold controls the type and amount of pressure delivered -- air, water, air/water mix, trace gas, or trace gas/water mix depending on the situation and local requirements.

Bring the line to test pressure

Add pressure slowly and controlled. Most pool leak detection technicians use 15 to 25 PSI for diagnostic testing. Do not rush. Do not overpressure old or brittle plumbing.

Watch the gauge

A stable gauge means the line is holding pressure. A dropping gauge means the line may be leaking. Record the starting pressure, ending pressure, and time elapsed. Documentation is not optional.

If the line fails -- locate the break

A failed pressure test is the beginning of the next phase, not the end of the investigation. Use acoustic listening equipment, pipe locating tools, or visual clues to find the exact location before recommending excavation.

How Lines Are Sealed -- Test Plugs and Fittings

Proper line sealing is critical. A loose plug or poorly seated fitting mimics a leaking pipe and creates false test results.

Nylon Closed Plugs

Rigid expanding plugs that seal by mechanical compression. Available in standard pool plumbing sizes. Anderson Manufacturing part numbers indicate the plug size -- ordering without the correct part number leads to wrong sizes. Common sizes: 120N (15/16"), 140N (1-3/8"), 145N (1-1/2"), 155N (1-7/8").

Inflatable Pneumatic Plugs

Expand via air pressure to seal the line from inside. Useful for irregular pipe sizes and lines that are difficult to access. Anderson Manufacturing models: 550 (1-1/2" closed), 555 (2" closed). Require extension hoses for deep lines.

Open Plugs

Allow water flow through while maintaining a pressure seal on the surrounding pipe wall. Used during active testing when the line needs to remain open at one end. Available in standard and inflatable versions.

Glued PVC Fittings

Some technicians install permanent PVC test port fittings in accessible locations -- typically at the equipment pad. These provide a clean, reliable pressure connection point for repeated testing without needing to re-plug the line each visit.

The Portable Pressure Manifold

A pressure manifold is the control center of a professional pressure testing setup. It regulates what type of pressure medium is delivered to the line and at what level, replacing the need for multiple separate rigs.

Air Testing vs. Water Testing

Both methods are used in pool leak detection. Each has advantages and considerations. Some jurisdictions specify which method is required.

Air Testing
  • Easier to hear escaping pressure -- air creates audible bubbling or hissing
  • Faster to set up and clear after testing
  • Stores more energy than water -- requires careful pressure control
  • Air bubbles visible in pool water around leak point
  • Useful for acoustic listening with hydrophone
Water Testing
  • Safer in some conditions -- stores less energy than compressed air
  • Required by some jurisdictions and building codes
  • Does not create audible hissing signal at break point
  • Useful where air testing creates risk in old plumbing
  • Can be combined with trace gas for enhanced detection

Always Verify Local Requirements

Florida Building Code Chapter 45 allows both water and air at 35 PSI for 15 minutes on new construction. However, some local jurisdictions, inspectors, or repair permit requirements may specify water-only testing. Always verify local requirements before performing pressure tests on permitted repair work.

For diagnostic leak detection -- not new construction -- many technicians use lower pressures (15-25 PSI) for safety on older or brittle plumbing.

Interpreting Pressure Results

If Pressure Drops

A pressure drop may mean the tested line is leaking -- but not always. Before concluding the pipe is broken, check the test setup first.

Pressure can drop due to a loose test plug, a leaking hose connection, a bad gauge, a valve not fully sealed, or temperature changes expanding and contracting the line. A beginner often misses this. A professional checks the setup before blaming the pipe.

If Pressure Holds

A passing pressure test is good evidence that the tested line is sound during that test. It does not prove the entire pool has no leak. The leak may still be structural, at a light niche, at a fitting, or in a different plumbing line.

The Professional Standard

Document starting pressure, ending pressure, time elapsed, plug locations, and test medium for every line tested. If it was not documented, it cannot be defended later.
