If water consistently stabilizes near the light elevation, the light area becomes a primary suspect. This is a clue -- not confirmation. Further testing determines the actual source.

With power verified off, inspect the light and surrounding area before removing anything.

Finding a Leak in a Nicheless Light
Nicheless lights have different failure points than traditional niche lights. The investigation follows the same systematic principles but focuses on different areas.

The pool light is probably the most misrepaired component in the industry. I have seen new fixtures installed over leaking conduits more times than I can count. The homeowner paid for a light, the water kept dropping, and nobody thought to look at the conduit.
The conduit is the pipeline. If the seal where the conduit enters the back of the niche fails, water travels straight up through the conduit to the junction box. You can put in ten new light fixtures and it will not matter if the conduit seal is compromised.
On nicheless lights, add the O-ring and the fitting body to your inspection list. Those are the failure points the industry is still learning about as nicheless installations become more common.
