What a Hydrostatic Relief Valve Does

Purpose

A hydrostatic relief valve is installed in some concrete or gunite pools to relieve groundwater pressure under the shell. When groundwater pressure builds, the valve can open to let water in and reduce the risk of the pool lifting or cracking. When closed, the valve must seal completely -- otherwise pool water escapes through it.

Some pools have a relief valve. Others have a threaded hydrostatic plug. Both can fail if they loosen, accumulate debris, wear out, or are damaged.

Determine whether the pool has a hydrostatic valve, a threaded plug, or neither. Identify drain pot condition, prior repairs, and nearby shell cracks before diving.

Inspect the Valve or Plug

Safely access the drain area. Inspect the valve or plug for debris, seating quality, visible damage, thread condition, and O-ring or gasket integrity. Also check the drain pot around the valve and surrounding shell.

Dye Test the Valve Area

With the pump off and water completely still, place a small amount of dye near the valve or plug. Watch for a steady pull into the valve. Also dye test the surrounding drain pot and any nearby cracks -- to confirm the valve is the source and not something adjacent to it.

Consider Line Testing if Needed

If the valve area shows no dye pull but the line is still suspect, pressure test the main drain suction circuit. A passing line test combined with a positive dye result at the valve points clearly to the valve as the source.
