The pool type matters. Concrete, fiberglass, and vinyl liner pools all have different main drain assemblies and different failure points.

Perform Underwater Visual Inspection

Inspect the drain area carefully before using any dye or plugs. Look for:

  • Drain cover condition and missing screws
  • Cracks in the drain pot
  • Cracks in the pool shell around the drain
  • Gaps between the drain and pool shell
  • Deteriorated plaster near the drain
  • Rust staining or exposed aggregate
  • Previous patching or epoxy repairs

The cover may need to be removed if safe and appropriate. The real leak may be inside the pot or at the pipe connection -- not visible with the cover in place.

Inspect the Hydrostatic Relief Valve or Plug

This is one of the most important steps and one of the most commonly skipped. The hydrostatic valve or plug sits at the bottom of the drain pot. Inspect and dye test around:

  • The valve seat
  • Plug threads
  • O-ring area
  • Bottom of the pot
  • Surrounding cracks near the valve

A leaking hydrostatic valve or plug can mimic a broken main drain suction line. Separating these two failure points before recommending any repair is essential.

Dye Test the Main Drain

With the pump off and water completely still, dye test each suspect area separately. Test:

  • Around the drain pot perimeter
  • Around the hydrostatic valve or plug
  • Around the pipe opening

Dye testing at depth requires extra care. Diver movement, poor visibility, and water disturbance can all create false readings. Place dye gently and wait before drawing conclusions.
