What Causes Pool Return Fitting Leaks?

A return fitting passes through the pool wall. It can fail at the fitting face, the wall interface, the gasket, the threads, or behind the wall -- and the cause depends on what type of pool it is.

How Return Fitting Leaks Differ by Pool Type

Gunite Pool

Plastic meets plaster. Over time, a gap opens at the fitting-to-shell interface because plastic and plaster do not expand and contract at the same rate.

Old failed epoxy at the seam is a common finding. Dye testing at the fitting face and seam confirms active leakage.

Vinyl Liner Pool

The liner is clamped by a faceplate, screws, and a gasket. Leaks happen from failed gasket compression, loose or damaged screws, cracked faceplate, or the liner being distorted or torn around the fitting.

Do not inspect like a gunite fitting. This is a gasket and compression problem, not a seam-to-plaster problem.

Fiberglass Pool

Leaks occur at the fitting gasket, fitting-to-shell interface, or from a cracked fitting. Backfill movement or support loss can stress fittings and open gaps at the shell penetration.

Do not over-tighten fittings or plugs on a fiberglass shell.

Why Dye Testing Must Be Done With the Pump Off

Return fittings deliver water into the pool when the pump is running. Testing while the pump is on pushes water out of the fitting, which overpowers any inward dye pull from a leak. The pump must be off and the water must be calm before dye is placed at a return fitting. Moving water will carry dye away from the fitting and produce unreliable results every time.
