What Dye Test Tools Are Needed for Pool Leak Detection?

What Each Tool Does in Practice

Fluorescent Leak Detection Dye

Pool-safe dye with high visibility. The goal is to place a small amount near the suspected defect and observe whether it is actively pulled in. Strong color visibility matters -- if you cannot clearly see the dye moving, the test result is ambiguous.

50ml Syringe

Controls the dye release. A controlled, small-volume release near the suspected area is far more useful than squirting dye into the pool broadly. Carry two -- one in use and one as backup.

25-Gauge Needles

Attach to the syringe for precise release in tight areas -- light conduit openings, skimmer corners, return fitting edges, small cracks. Carry several extras. They are easily lost, bent, or misplaced during pool inspections.

Extension Tubes

Allow the syringe to reach inside light niches, deep skimmer ports, recessed fittings, and other areas where the technician cannot get the syringe physically close enough to the defect while staying still.

Underwater Flashlight

Good lighting is essential for seeing dye movement near dark fittings, inside light niches, in drain sumps, and along tile lines. Without adequate light, subtle dye pull is invisible.

Small Inspection Mirror

Allows the technician to see behind fittings, inside light ring edges, around skimmer corners, and into other areas where direct line of sight is blocked. Used before and during dye testing.

Mask and Snorkel

Required for underwater visual inspection and dye testing. The technician must be able to see the dye release point and the defect clearly -- not from above the waterline.

Weight Belt

Stability is everything in dye testing. Uncontrolled body movement disturbs the water and moves the dye away from the test area before it can show active pull. Weight belt keeps the technician neutral and still.

Documentation -- Phone or Camera

Active dye movement should be photographed or videoed when possible. A dye pull on a skimmer throat crack is compelling evidence. Document it before the dye dissipates.

What Dye Testing Proves -- and What It Does Not

Dye testing confirms local water movement at the specific point being tested under the conditions present at that moment. If dye is actively pulled into a fitting, crack, or conduit opening -- that is evidence of active water movement at that location.

Dye testing does not prove the pool is otherwise leak-free. It does not clear underground plumbing. A negative dye test at one location does not rule out other defects at different locations or conditions (debris in a crack may stop dye pull temporarily -- the same crack may be actively leaking). Every test must be documented with the location, conditions, and result.

Inspect before dye testing. Look at every fitting face, crack, and joint with the flashlight and mirror before placing a single drop of dye.
