Faster water loss with the pump running is a clue -- not a confirmed return line break. A return fitting leak and a return line leak are two different problems. Pressure testing evaluates the line. Dye testing evaluates the fitting.

A pressure drop may suggest a leak in the return circuit, but bad plugs, open valves, shared manifolds, hidden return branches, and test rig leaks must be ruled out first. A return line leak and a return fitting leak are two different problems requiring different tests.
Return fitting leak: Water escapes at the wall penetration. Confirmed with calm-water dye testing at the fitting face, seam, or gasket. Does not require pressure testing to confirm.
Return line leak: Water escapes in the plumbing behind the wall or underground. Confirmed with professional pressure testing of the isolated return circuit. Different repair, different cost.
Both can exist in the same pool. A confirmed fitting leak does not clear the underground line. A clean dye test at the fitting does not clear the line either.
Some pools have multiple returns, spa returns, step jets, bench jets, cleaner lines, water feature feeds, shared manifolds, automation valves, check valves, and solar or heater bypasses. If one connected opening is missed during isolation, the test can fail even if the buried pipe has no defect. Map the return system before sealing anything.
Return lines may have high spots where air collects. Air escapes faster than water through any leak in the circuit -- including a leaking plug, a loose gauge connection, or a valve that isn't fully closed. A pressure drop caused by trapped air migrating to a high spot behaves differently from a pressure drop caused by a crack in the pipe. A technician who doesn't understand how air and water behave in a return circuit will misread the gauge.
Does the pool lose water faster with the pump on? This is one clue toward pressure-side plumbing -- not a confirmed return line break. Pump-on loss can also mean equipment, waste line, water features, or fittings.
Map every return, spa jet, cleaner connection, and branch before testing. A return circuit that is not fully understood cannot be properly isolated -- and a poorly isolated test produces unreliable results.
Visual inspection, equipment inspection, dye testing at fittings, and waste line check all narrow whether the underground return line is the actual remaining suspect before pressure is applied.
Isolate the return circuit. Verify the setup. Apply controlled pressure. Check for setup leaks. Monitor the gauge. Verify the result is repeatable before concluding the line failed.
A confirmed pressure drop on a verified, isolated return circuit supports a possible return line leak. Document start pressure, end pressure, duration, setup conditions, and limitations.
Further locating -- acoustic listening, pipe locating, trace gas -- before any concrete is removed. Document that fitting leaks were separately evaluated. Verify the line holds after repair.
Does faster water loss with the pump running mean the return line is leaking?
Not automatically. Pump-running water loss may point toward pressure-side plumbing, but equipment leaks, waste line discharge, water features, spa systems, cleaner lines, and return fittings must all be checked before ordering a return line pressure test.
Can dye testing find a return line leak?
Dye testing can confirm leaks at visible return fittings at the pool wall. Underground return line leaks are not visible and usually require professional pressure testing and pipe locating to confirm and locate.
Does a failed return line pressure test show the exact leak location?
No. It shows pressure loss in the tested circuit. The exact location requires further locating work -- acoustic listening, pipe locating, trace gas, or a combination of methods.
Can both a return fitting and a return line leak at the same time?
Yes. That is why both must be evaluated separately. A clean dye test at the fitting does not clear the underground line. A failed pressure test does not prove the fitting is sound.
