Pump-running loss is a strong clue -- but equipment and waste lines should be inspected before assuming underground pipe failure.
Pool loses water with the pump running → assume underground return line break → recommend cutting the deck. This sequence skips the equipment pad inspection, the waste line check, the water feature check, and the spa mode check. Always inspect the visible, accessible causes first.
The pump, filter, heater, chlorinator, salt cell unions, valves, pipe unions, and drain plugs can all leak while running. Inspect the equipment pad while the system is operating before investigating anything underground.
This is a major trap. Water can discharge through a waste or backwash path while the pump runs -- especially with multiport valve issues, internal valve bypass, or incorrect valve position. The discharge may be at the side of the house or at the street, not visible at the equipment pad. Always trace where waste water would go.
Waterfalls, fountains, raised walls, spillways, and decorative features may leak only when operating. The plumbing may be intact while the feature basin, waterproofing, or stonework allows water to escape.
A raised spa can leak differently in spa mode versus pool mode versus spillover mode. Valve position matters. Test each mode separately and document the results.
Pools with dedicated pressure cleaner lines may only leak when the cleaner system or booster pump is running. Testing with the cleaner off may miss this entirely.
A cracked, separated, or damaged return line can allow pump pressure to force water out while the system runs. This requires line isolation and pressure testing by a trained professional to confirm -- not just pump-running observation.
If the pool has solar heating, water may escape at the roof, at a valve, or in the solar plumbing only when the solar system is active.
Automation can hide the real pattern. The pool may lose water only when a valve turns, a feature activates, or the pump changes speed. Document mode, speed, valve position, and all active features.
Suction-side problems often show as air in the pump basket, bubbles at returns, noisy pump operation, or loss of prime. They may not always create obvious water loss but can complicate the diagnosis when static and operating conditions are compared.
Ask the customer: does the pool lose more water with the pump on? Does it stop losing when the pump is off? Does it happen only in certain modes? This narrows the inspection before arrival.
Understand the full circulation system -- pressure side, suction side, water features, spa, cleaner, solar, waste line -- before interpreting pump-running loss.
Inspect easy, visible causes first. Equipment pad. Waste line. Water features. Spa mode. Then move toward pressure testing if those are ruled out.
Confirm the cause with the appropriate test -- equipment inspection while running, waste line observation, pressure testing, or line isolation. Document pump status during every test.
Pump-running water loss becomes confirmed evidence only when a specific source is identified and documented -- not from the loss pattern alone.
Recommend repair only after identifying the specific confirmed cause. Document what was and was not tested. Do not recommend excavation from pump-running observation alone.
