Pump-on/pump-off testing is one of the most useful -- and most misunderstood -- tools in pool leak detection. It narrows the next step. It does not finish the diagnosis.

Pump-on and pump-off behavior tells the technician where to look next -- not where the leak definitely is.
When the pump is off, the pool approaches a static condition. Water loss during pump-off may suggest a leak in the pool shell, skimmer throat or body, light niche or conduit, return fitting, main drain area, hydrostatic valve area, a crack, tile line, spa wall, or any plumbing opening below the water level.
But pump-off loss does not prove the exact source. A pool can lose water with the pump off from more than one type of defect. Visual inspection, dye testing, and line testing are still needed to confirm.
When the pump runs, the entire circulation system becomes active -- creating pressure, flow, and vibration in parts of the pool that are passive when the pump is off. This can cause some leaks to appear or worsen.
Pump-running water loss may suggest return line leaks, pressure-side cleaner leaks, equipment leaks at the pad, filter or heater leaks, waste or backwash line discharge, valve issues, water feature leaks, spa spillover leaks, solar line leaks, or mode-specific plumbing problems.
If the autofill is active during testing, it may replace lost water and make the pool appear stable even while it is leaking. For any meaningful pump-on/pump-off comparison, the autofill must be disabled or clearly documented as active during the test.

Uncontrolled test conditions create bad conclusions. The report should document autofill status, start and end water levels, test duration, pump status, pump speed or mode, valve positions, spa or pool mode, water features on or off, cleaner line on or off, rain, wind, and evaporation conditions.
This observation should lead to better testing -- not directly to a repair recommendation. Follow-up may include visual inspection of the equipment pad while operating, checking the waste and backwash discharge line, dye testing, hydrophone listening, pressure testing by trained professionals, line isolation, or water-level monitoring.
The customer often already knows whether the pool loses more with the pump on or off. Asking directly is part of the intake conversation -- and shapes the inspection sequence.
Understand what the pump actually does to each part of the system -- pressure side, suction side, water features, spa mode, waste line -- before interpreting the loss pattern.
Pump-on/pump-off is a narrowing tool. It guides where to inspect and test next -- equipment pad, waste line, water features, return plumbing -- not a substitute for those tests.
Follow the pump behavior observation with actual tests -- visual inspection, dye, pressure, acoustic listening. Document the pump status during every test.
Confirmed findings require evidence beyond pump behavior. A confirmed return leak requires a failed pressure test, not just pump-running water loss.
Never recommend excavation or underground pipe repair based on pump-on/pump-off behavior alone. Document the observation and the confirming evidence separately.
Does water loss with the pump off always mean a shell leak?

Does water loss with the pump running always mean a return line leak?
No. It may involve return plumbing, but equipment leaks, waste line discharge, water features, spa systems, and cleaner lines should all be investigated first before assuming underground pipe failure.
Can a bucket test locate a leak?
No. A bucket test compares pool water loss to evaporation. It tells you whether the pool is losing more water than expected -- it does not tell you where the leak is.
Should homeowners try to pressure test the plumbing based on this test result?
No. Pressure testing can be dangerous and should be performed by trained professionals with proper equipment and safety procedures.
