Most fiberglass pool leaks are found at fittings and penetrations -- not through the gelcoat surface. Spider cracks are not automatically leaks. Dye testing confirms; appearance does not.

Surface cracks, spider cracks, or blisters do not automatically mean the pool is leaking. Suspected defects must be dye tested. Fitting and penetration leaks must be separated from underground plumbing leaks -- they are different problems with different repairs.
The shell itself can leak, but most fiberglass pool leaks are found at fittings and penetrations -- skimmers, returns, lights, drains, and vacuum ports -- where hardware passes through the molded shell.
Fiberglass pools may show gelcoat crazing, spider cracks, blisters, surface fading, stains, or old repair marks. These should be documented -- but they should not automatically be called active leaks.
A surface defect becomes a leak concern when there is supporting evidence: dye pull, water-loss history matching that area, visible damage at a penetration, or deep cracking with movement. Document, test, then conclude.
Fiberglass pools can flex. If the backfill material surrounding the shell shifts or washes out -- from nearby construction, ground movement, or ongoing water loss -- fittings and plumbing connections behind the shell can be stressed. This can open gaps at gaskets, loosen fittings, and stress pipe connections that were previously secure.
Signs of backfill support problems include visible shell flexing or sagging areas, new fitting leaks that appear without obvious surface damage, and wet or soft areas in the soil around the pool structure.
A fiberglass pool may lose water through the shell, through a fitting, or through underground plumbing. Those are three different problems -- and the repair path, cost, and diagnostic method are different for each.
If dye pulls at a fitting or crack, that supports a local leak. If fittings and shell areas all test clean but pump-running water loss points to plumbing, a trained professional may need to pressure test the line. One clean dye test does not clear the entire plumbing system.
Does the pool lose water with the pump off? Fitting and shell leaks are passive. Pump-running loss may point toward plumbing. Has the pool had prior fiberglass repairs that appear to be failing?
Fiberglass is a molded shell. Penetrations are the most common leak zone. Gelcoat surface flaws are not the same as shell leaks. Backfill integrity affects fitting security.
Visual inspection of fittings, gaskets, and old repair areas narrows the dye testing targets. Gelcoat defects that show movement or depth get priority testing.
Pump off. Calm water. Dye at fitting gaskets, shell defects with depth or movement, old repairs, and drain areas. Do not skip fittings to focus on visible gelcoat crazing.
Confirmed fitting leak = dye pull at gasket edge or fitting interface. Confirmed shell crack = dye pull into crack under calm conditions. Document the specific location precisely.
Fitting repair, shell repair, or professional pressure testing -- based on what was actually confirmed. Note if a fiberglass specialist or structural evaluation is recommended. Do not make warranty claims.
Do fiberglass pool cracks always leak?
No. Gelcoat crazing and spider cracks are often cosmetic. Dye testing and water-loss history are needed before calling a fiberglass crack an active leak. A surface defect without dye pull is documented but not confirmed as a water-loss source.
Where do fiberglass pools most commonly leak?
