A crack is not the conclusion. It is a target for testing. The only way to know if a pool crack is leaking is to test it -- not to look at it.

The most common field confirmation is controlled dye testing in calm water -- if dye pulls into the crack, that supports an active leak finding. Appearance alone is not enough. Not every visible crack leaks, and not every crack that looks clean is harmless. A crack must be tested before it is called either an active leak or a cosmetic defect.
Do not call every crack a leak. Do not call every crack cosmetic.
Test it. Then conclude.
The strongest single piece of field evidence is visible dye movement into the crack under calm-water dye testing. Without that, a crack is a suspect -- not a confirmed leak.
The pump must be off. The water must be calm -- no returns flowing, no water features, no autofill, no movement from a prior hydrophone sweep. The dye syringe tip should be placed very close to the crack, not from a distance. Release a small amount of dye slowly and watch for pull.
If dye pulls sharply into the crack, that supports an active leak. If dye floats away, swirls, or disperses evenly, that does not confirm a leak. False readings happen when the water is moving, the technician moves too fast, the syringe is too far from the crack, or the tip touches the crack and physically pushes dye in.
Gunite: A crack may be surface plaster only, or may extend deeper into the shell. Rust staining below a crack may indicate rebar exposure. Visual inspection cannot tell the difference -- dye testing is needed.
Fiberglass: Spider cracking and gelcoat crazing are often cosmetic. Dye testing and water-loss history are needed before calling a fiberglass surface crack an active leak.
Vinyl liner: What people call a "crack" in a vinyl pool is usually a tear, cut, seam split, wrinkle, or fold in the liner material -- not a structural crack. The inspection approach is completely different.
If the pool loses water and stabilizes near the elevation of a crack, that crack deserves close testing. But water level behavior is still only a clue. A pool may have multiple leaks at different elevations. A plumbing leak may contribute to the same water loss. A crack at the right elevation is a stronger test target -- it is not a confirmed source until tested.
Further evaluation by a qualified pool contractor, repair specialist, or structural professional may be needed when a crack is wide, deep, or displaced; when it is growing or has changed since a prior inspection; when rust staining is present; when hollow plaster or delamination surrounds it; when prior repairs at the same location have failed; or when the crack is near a structural transition, fitting, or penetration.
A leak detection report should not make engineering conclusions about crack depth, structural integrity, or pool safety unless the inspector is qualified to do so.
Does the water loss slow or stop at the elevation of the crack? Has the crack been there for years or appeared recently? Has it been patched before? The history shapes the priority of the test.
Understand the pool type before testing. A gunite crack, a fiberglass surface mark, and a vinyl liner tear are three completely different conditions requiring different tests and different reports.
Staining, water-level behavior, rust, and hollow sound near the crack narrow whether it needs immediate testing or falls lower in the priority sequence.
Pump off. Water calm. Dye tip close to the crack. Small amount. Slow release. Watch for active pull. Video the result before the dye disperses.
Active dye pull = confirmed active leak at that location under those conditions. Document the location precisely. Note the pool type, crack appearance, and any associated staining or prior repair material.
Repair for confirmed leaking cracks. Further evaluation for cracks with movement, depth, rust, or prior failures. No engineering guarantees. Scope clearly stated in the report.
Does every pool crack leak?
No. Some cracks are cosmetic or limited to the surface finish. In gunite pools, plaster cracks may not extend through the shell. In fiberglass, gelcoat crazing is often cosmetic. A crack must be dye tested under calm conditions before it is called an active leak.
How do you confirm a crack is leaking?
The most common field confirmation is dye testing in calm water with the pump off. If dye pulls clearly into the crack, that is evidence of active water movement through the crack. That evidence, combined with water-loss history, becomes the finding in the report.
Can water level help identify a leaking crack?
Water level behavior is a useful clue. If the pool stabilizes near the crack elevation, that crack is a priority test target. But water level alone does not confirm the crack is leaking -- multiple leaks may exist at different elevations, and plumbing leaks may contribute to the same water loss.
When should a structural expert be involved?
When cracks show visible movement, widening, displacement, rust staining, delamination, hollow plaster, or repeated repair failure -- conditions that suggest the issue goes beyond what leak detection scope covers. A qualified pool contractor, repair specialist, or structural professional should evaluate those conditions.
