How Do You Pressure Test a Main Drain Line?

Main drain testing requires more care than any other pressure test -- safety, sump access, correct isolation, and separating the suction line from the hydrostatic valve, sump, and shell.

A main drain line is pressure tested by shutting off and controlling pump power, safely accessing the main drain sump, plugging the suction port, isolating the line at the equipment pad, applying controlled pressure, and watching the gauge. If pressure drops, the technician must verify the plug, dual-drain isolation, pad valve, and test setup before blaming the underground pipe. The suction line is only one possible source of deep-end water loss -- the hydrostatic valve, cracked sump, shell cracks, and drain frame must be tested separately with dye testing.

Safety First -- Non-Negotiable for Main Drain Work

What the Pressure Test Checks -- and What It Does Not

A main drain pressure test checks only the isolated suction pipe between the drain sump and the equipment pad. Deep-end water loss can come from several separate sources -- and the pressure test does not answer for all of them.

Suction Line -- Pressure Test

Isolated pipe between the sump and the pump. Confirmed by pressure drop after setup is verified.

Hydrostatic Valve -- Dye Test

Valve inside the sump. Confirmed by dye pull into the valve center or threads.

Cracked Sump Wall -- Dye Test

Concrete or plastic sump body. Confirmed by dye pull into sump wall cracks.

Shell Near Drain -- Dye Test

Pool floor cracks near the drain. Confirmed by dye pull into floor cracks adjacent to the sump.

Drain Frame Joint -- Dye Test

Plaster-to-frame separation. Confirmed by dye pull at the frame perimeter.

Pipe Socket -- Dye or Pressure

Glued socket at the sump base. May show dye pull or show up as pressure failure depending on severity.

A line that holds pressure can coexist with a leaking hydrostatic valve. A hydrostatic valve that passes dye can coexist with a broken suction pipe. Use both tests when the symptoms call for both.

Dye Test the Sump Area Before Pressure Testing

Before pressure testing the line, inspect and dye test the hydrostatic valve, sump walls, pipe socket opening, drain frame joint, and any shell cracks near the drain. If these areas produce a confirmed dye pull, that is the source -- and the pressure test may not be needed yet.

Step 03

Shut Off and Control Pump Power

Turn the pump off at the breaker or use a lockout procedure. The pump must not be able to activate during drain cover removal, sump inspection, or the pressure test itself.

Step 04

Access the Sump and Plug the Suction Port

Remove the drain cover if required and safe to do so. Keep screws in a pouch. Inspect the sump. Plug the main drain suction port with the correctly sized plug, fully seated. For dual-drain systems, both drain pots may need to be plugged depending on how the plumbing manifolds.

Isolate the Line at the Equipment Pad

Close the main drain valve at the pad. Verify it is fully closed. Connect the test rig and gauge to the main drain line at the pad side.

Apply Controlled Pressure -- Be Conservative

Main drain suction lines require conservative pressure. The sump, drain pot, and connected components may not tolerate aggressive testing. Apply controlled, low pressure -- do not push toward high-end PSI ranges on main drain circuits. Note starting pressure. Monitor the gauge.

If Pressure Drops -- Check the Setup

Locate Before Recommending Excavation

A confirmed line failure means the pipe is losing pressure. It does not tell you where underground the break is. Use acoustic tools, trace gas, or a pipe camera to locate the break. Reinstall the drain cover correctly. Repair. Retest. Document.
