A main drain leak is not automatically a broken pipe. The drain assembly, sump, hydrostatic valve, shell, and suction line are all separate candidates -- and they require separate tests to distinguish them.

Deep-end water loss should not automatically be blamed on a broken pipe. A professional diagnosis tests the hydrostatic valve, sump walls, shell, and suction line as separate candidates before recommending any repair.
Each component is a separate leak candidate. A failure in any one of them can produce water loss from the deep end -- with nearly identical visible symptoms. The diagnosis must go deeper than the symptom.

The pump must be off and locked out before removing any drain cover. Keep drain cover screws in a pouch during inspection. Never leave a drain cover off and unattended. VGB drain cover safety compliance is non-negotiable.
Remove the drain cover. Inspect the sump interior, hydrostatic valve, valve threads, sump walls, pipe socket, and plaster-to-frame joint. Note any debris, prior patches, cracked components, or visible separation before applying dye.
Get close to the drain sump with the dye syringe. Surface dye is not reliable at depth. Test each component separately:
A dye pull into the valve points to the hydrostatic valve. Dye pulling into a sump wall crack, pipe socket, or shell crack points to a different source. Both can be present simultaneously.
If the pump pulls air from the main drain, if dye testing is inconclusive, or if the pool continues to lose water below where the sump inspection can account for, pressure test the main drain suction line. Document start PSI, end PSI, and test duration. Verify the plug and isolation setup before condemning the underground pipe.
The repair depends on the confirmed source. A hydrostatic valve replacement, sump patch, pipe repair, and shell crack repair are four different jobs. Reinstall the drain cover correctly. Verify with dye testing, pressure testing, or level monitoring after repair.
Ask about water loss below all wall fittings, pump air, recent draining, and prior deep-end repairs. Post-drain leaks that drop to the floor are a major signal.
Map the full drain assembly -- cover, frame, sump, hydrostatic valve, pipe socket, suction port, and plumbing path to the equipment pad.
Use water-level behavior and pump symptoms to confirm the deep-end focus. Separate valve, sump, shell, and suction line as distinct candidates before testing.
Shut off power, access the sump, dye test each component close to the target. Pressure test the suction line separately when plumbing is suspected.
Name the exact source: hydrostatic valve, sump wall, pipe socket, frame joint, shell crack, or suction line. Do not stop at "main drain area."
Match the repair to the confirmed source. Reinstall the cover correctly. Verify with dye testing and level monitoring before closing the job.
Sees deep-end water loss and immediately suspects a broken main drain pipe. Recommends pressure testing and potentially excavation without first inspecting the hydrostatic valve, sump walls, or shell around the drain.
Accesses the sump and dye tests each component separately -- valve, sump walls, socket, frame joint, and shell. Pressure tests the suction line when actual plumbing failure is suspected. Does not recommend excavation based on symptoms alone.
