A hydrostatic valve is designed to let water in when groundwater pressure rises. When it fails to reseal, it lets pool water out -- and can look exactly like a broken main drain pipe.

Debris under the valve seat, a worn gasket, damaged threads, a broken spring, a cracked valve body, or simple age can all prevent the valve from closing tightly -- allowing pool water to escape through the bottom of the pool. A technician confirms the source by safely accessing the drain sump and dye testing the valve and its threads separately from the drain pot, shell, and suction line.
A hydrostatic relief valve sits inside the main drain sump at the deepest part of the pool. Its job is to relieve groundwater pressure from beneath the pool shell -- particularly during draining or during periods of high water table.
When outside groundwater pressure exceeds the weight of the pool water above it, the valve can open and allow groundwater into the pool. This prevents the empty or low-water shell from being lifted or cracked by hydrostatic pressure from below.
The problem occurs when the valve opens and then fails to reseal. Instead of protecting the shell, a stuck-open hydrostatic valve becomes a drain path for pool water -- allowing water to seep out through the bottom of the pool regardless of what the rest of the plumbing shows.
Sand, plaster chips, pebbles, leaves, or scale can get caught under the valve seat and prevent the valve from closing completely -- even when groundwater pressure is no longer elevated.
The gasket on the valve seat deteriorates over time. A compressed, cracked, or hardened gasket no longer creates a watertight seal when the valve attempts to close.
Many hydrostatic valves use a spring mechanism to hold the valve closed under normal conditions. A broken or fatigued spring cannot maintain closure pressure.
Cross-threading during installation or repair, or corrosion of the valve threads, can prevent the valve from seating properly against the sump.
The plastic valve body can crack from physical impact, thermal stress, or improper installation -- creating a leak path through the valve itself.
Older valves made of PVC or ABS become brittle over time. The valve may appear intact but no longer seals under pool water pressure.
A valve that was not fully threaded into the sump -- or one that has loosened over time -- allows water to bypass the valve body entirely through the thread gap.
When a pool is drained for acid washing, resurfacing, or cleaning, the valve may open under groundwater pressure and then fail to reseal correctly when the pool is refilled.
Key diagnostic insight: A hydrostatic valve leak and a main drain pipe leak can produce nearly identical symptoms. A pressure test on the suction line can help separate them -- a line that holds pressure does not have a pipe break, which points back toward the valve, sump, or shell as the source.
A post-drain refill leak that drops to the deep end is a strong indicator the hydrostatic valve may not have reseated after being open during the drain.
The pump must be off and locked out before removing any main drain cover. This is a non-negotiable safety step. Keep drain cover screws in a controlled pouch -- lost screws near an open drain create a hazard.
Remove the drain cover. Inspect the sump for debris, scale, plaster chips, or any material that could be preventing the valve from closing. Clean the sump enough to see the valve, seat, threads, and surrounding pot clearly.
Use a dye syringe and get close to the valve. Surface dye dropped from above is unreliable at depth. Test:
A steady pull downward into the valve center or around the threads supports a hydrostatic valve leak. Dye pulling into the sump wall or shell crack points to a different source.
If the valve tests clean but the pool continues to lose water below the drain level, pressure test the main drain suction line. A line that holds pressure during the test window is not the pipe -- focus returns to the valve, sump, or shell. A line that drops pressure points toward plumbing.
Confirmed valve leak → clean, reseat, or replace the valve as appropriate. Reinstall the drain cover correctly to VGB safety standards. Verify with dye testing and water-level monitoring after repair.
Ask about recent draining, refill history, and whether loss continues below all wall fittings. Post-drain leaks that drop to the floor are a major diagnostic signal.
Identify the drain assembly -- cover type, sump style, valve or plug configuration, suction port, and plumbing layout -- before testing anything.
Use water-level behavior to confirm the deep-end focus. Separate valve, sump, shell, and suction line as distinct candidate sources before testing.
Shut off power, access the sump, clean it, and dye test close to the valve. Pressure test the suction line separately when plumbing is suspected.
Confirm whether the leak is the valve itself, the valve threads, the sump wall, the shell, or the suction pipe. Do not stop at "drain area leak."
Repair the confirmed source. Reinstall the drain cover correctly. Verify with dye and level testing before closing out the job.
Sees deep-end water loss and assumes the main drain pipe is broken. Recommends excavation without testing the valve, sump, or shell -- potentially sending the customer into unnecessary and expensive repairs.
Tests the hydrostatic valve, sump walls, shell, and suction line as separate candidates. Knows that a valve failure can produce identical symptoms to a pipe break -- and that a pressure test on the line can help separate them before anyone picks up a jackhammer.
