What PSI Should Pool Plumbing Be Pressure Tested At?

The best pressure is not the highest pressure. It is the safest pressure that produces a reliable test result without damaging the system -- and it depends on the line, the pipe, and the equipment.

Pool plumbing for residential leak detection is commonly tested in the range of 10-15 PSI, with suction-side lines, older plumbing, and main drain circuits tested more conservatively at or below 10-12 PSI. There is no single universal PSI that applies to every pool. The technician selects the right pressure based on line type, pipe condition, plug rating, equipment limits, and the purpose of the test. Higher pressure does not improve the diagnosis -- it increases the risk of creating new damage.

Why There Is No Single Universal PSI

Residential pool leak detection pressure testing is different from pressure testing new construction plumbing. New plumbing may be tested at higher pressures before burial or decking. Leak detection on existing buried plumbing is a different job with different constraints.

Older buried plumbing may have brittle PVC, aged glue joints, stressed fittings, or unknown repair history. The technician cannot see the pipe. Applying excessive pressure to an old system can blow out a plug, crack a fitting that was not leaking, damage a skimmer body, or turn a failed test plug into a hazard.

A line that leaks at 10 PSI does not need 30 PSI to prove it has a problem. Controlled, conservative pressure is not a compromise -- it is professional practice.

What Factors Determine the Right Pressure

Why Higher PSI Is Not Better

Over-pressurizing pool plumbing can cause real damage -- before, during, or after the test:

Blow out a test plug that was holding -- a plug under too much pressure becomes a hazard

Crack old or brittle PVC that was holding -- a test creates a new failure

Break weak glue joints that were not originally leaking

Damage skimmer bodies or drain sumps not designed to hold pressure

Create false confidence -- a line that barely holds 30 PSI may still leak at operating pressure

Create a hazardous compressed-air situation if the circuit ruptures under load

Air vs. Water as the Test Medium

Water Testing

Water does not compress. It carries less stored-energy risk than air at the same pressure. Useful for confirming whether a line holds. Harder to use for acoustic location of the break since there is no air escaping.

Air Testing

Compressed air stores energy. Must be handled carefully. Can be used to create acoustic signal at the leak point (air bubbling or acoustic noise), which is useful for locating breaks. Requires care at every pressure level.

Some technicians use a small amount of air over water -- applying air pressure on a water-filled line -- to combine the safety of water with the acoustic usefulness of air. The approach depends on the technician's training, equipment, and the specific line being tested.

Ask about pipe age, prior repairs, and whether any plumbing was recently replaced. Old or questionable plumbing warrants lower pressure.
