A leak that only appears in one mode points toward a different cause than a leak that appears in all modes.
The technician must separate actual water loss from water transfer between the pool and spa before any diagnosis can be made.

A leak at a spa jet may look simple from inside the spa, but the actual failure may be behind the wall -- at the jet body, pipe connection, or return line -- not at the visible fitting face.
Spa Draining Into the Pool Is Not Always a Leak
If an elevated spa drains down into the pool overnight with the pump off, the problem may be a check valve or diverter valve that is not sealing properly. Water flows from the higher elevation (spa) to the lower elevation (pool) through the shared plumbing system.
This means the water stays inside the pool-spa system. The pool may even gain water when the spa drops. That is fundamentally different from water escaping into the ground through a structural or plumbing failure.
A beginner may call this a spa leak. A professional checks the valve system first.
Spa Leak Symptoms
Each symptom is a clue. None of them proves the leak source by itself. The diagnostic process must determine which combination of symptoms points to the actual failure.
Testing by Operating Mode
Comparing water loss across operating modes is the key diagnostic step for any pool-spa system. The mode in which loss occurs points directly toward the suspect systems.
Pool Mode -- Pump On
Tests pool plumbing under normal circulation. Helps isolate pool-specific circuits from spa circuits.
Spa Mode -- Pump On
Activates spa jets, spa plumbing, and heater. Loss here points to spa jets, spa plumbing, or equipment.
Spillover Mode
Tests the spillway connection between spa and pool. Loss here may indicate a spillway or shared wall leak.
Pump Off -- Spa Isolated
Tests for static loss from spa shell, valve transfer, or gravity-driven drainage into the pool.

Hear the Customer and History
Ask when the spa loses water, in which mode, whether the pool level rises when the spa drops, and whether any recent valve, heater, plumbing, or automation work was done.
Understand the Pool and Spa Layout
Identify shared equipment, spa return and suction lines, air lines, jet count, drains, lights, spillway, valves, check valves, and automation settings. You cannot diagnose a spa leak without understanding the plumbing layout.
Narrow the Leak Zone by Mode
Compare water loss in pool mode, spa mode, spillover mode, pump on, and pump off. If loss only occurs in one mode, that mode points to the responsible system.
Test Systematically
- Visual inspection of jets, drains, lights, spillway, and shell
- Dye testing around jets, lights, drains, and spillway with still water
- Pressure testing spa suction and return lines separately
- Testing air lines separately from jet plumbing
- Checking valve bypass and check valve sealing
- Inspecting equipment pad for heater or valve leaks
Expose the Leak Source
If a line fails pressure testing, acoustic tools, hydrophones, or trace gas may be needed to locate the exact break. If a fitting pulls dye, confirm whether the leak is at the fitting face, fitting body, or pipe connection behind the wall.
Recommend Repair and Verify
Explain what is leaking, what test confirmed it, whether it is structural or plumbing, whether any trade referral is needed, and how the repair should be verified. Document valve positions and test mode at the time of each finding.
