A pool light is an intentional hole through the shell. When the seal at the conduit opening fails, water finds a drain path out of the pool -- even if the light still works.

When the cord seal fails, cracks, shrinks, or was disturbed during light service, water enters the conduit path and drains out of the pool. A technician must separate a conduit leak from a cracked niche body, failed light gasket, vinyl faceplate leak, fixture lens failure, or shell crack near the light before recommending any repair.
A pool light is an intentional penetration through the shell. Every component at that penetration -- the niche, the cord, the conduit seal, the gasket, the faceplate -- is a potential leak point.
In a wet-niche light, the niche itself fills with pool water during normal operation. That is expected. The problem begins when water gains access to the conduit and travels out of the pool through a failed seal, cracked conduit, or poor connection at the niche.
The conduit can become a silent drain line. Water moves toward the junction box, under the deck, or into surrounding soil -- often without any visible sign at the pool surface until significant loss has occurred.
Turn off power to the pool light at the breaker before removing the fixture or inspecting the niche. Do not rely on a switch alone. Leak testing near a pool light is not an electrical repair -- stay within your scope and document when electrical work is needed by a licensed electrician.
The most common cause. The seal around the cord at the conduit opening cracks, shrinks, hardens, or separates -- opening a water path into the conduit.
Removing or replacing the light fixture pulls the cord and disturbs an existing seal. A previously watertight seal can fail after a routine light service call.
Using the incorrect sealant type -- one that won't bond to wet or underwater surfaces -- leads to premature seal failure even if the repair appeared complete at the time.
Applying sealant over dirty, wet, or contaminated surfaces prevents a good bond. The sealant separates as soon as water pressure acts on it.
The PVC conduit behind the niche can crack from ground movement, freeze-thaw stress, soil pressure, or age -- creating a leak path independent of the cord seal.
The conduit connection at the back of the niche body can loosen over time due to movement, vibration, or poor original installation.
The conduit and the pool shell expand and contract at different rates. Over years of thermal cycling, this can work the conduit connection loose or stress the seal.
Old epoxy, putty, silicone, or butyl applied over the conduit opening may have held initially but failed over time -- especially if applied without proper surface prep.
A light area leak is not automatically a conduit leak. The technician must separate each possible source before committing to a repair.
Note: Water inside the light fixture is a separate issue. A flooded fixture may trip a GFCI or damage the lamp, but it does not automatically mean the pool is losing water through the conduit.
A leak that starts immediately after a light replacement almost always points to a disturbed cord seal.
Cut power to the light at the breaker before touching the fixture. Remove the light according to proper procedure and let it rest on the pool deck. Inspect the niche, the rear conduit opening, the cord, the existing sealant, and the niche body.
If water stops near the light elevation, the light area is a strong suspect. If the pool continues to drop below the light, the light may still be leaking, but additional sources exist lower in the pool -- and all must be investigated.
Place a small amount of dye close to the rear conduit opening. Watch for a steady, consistent pull into the conduit. Then test the niche body, faceplate, gasket, screw holes, and surrounding shell separately. Do not apply dye from the surface -- get close to the target area.
Do not use moving water. Moving water disperses dye and produces false results.
Name the specific source: conduit seal, niche body crack, niche-to-shell separation, gasket failure, faceplate screw hole, or shell crack near the light. A vague finding of "light leaks" is not sufficient for a professional report or repair recommendation.
After repair, verify with dye testing at the confirmed location and water-level monitoring. If electrical work is needed as part of the repair, document it and refer to a licensed electrician.
Ask if loss stops near the light elevation and whether the light was recently serviced. A service call that precedes a new leak is a major diagnostic clue.
Identify the light type (wet niche, nicheless, retrofit), niche material, conduit routing, junction box location, and any prior repairs.
Use water-level behavior to confirm the light elevation is in range, then narrow further by testing the conduit opening vs. niche body vs. gasket vs. shell.
Turn off power, access the niche, dye test the conduit opening in still water, then separately test the niche body, gasket, faceplate, screw holes, and adjacent shell.
Confirm the exact leak path. Conduit seal, niche crack, gasket failure, and shell crack are different problems with different repairs.
Repair the confirmed source. Verify with dye and level testing. Document electrical referrals when applicable.
Says "the light is leaking" and packs putty into the conduit opening. May be right. May miss a niche body crack, gasket failure, or shell defect entirely -- and the pool keeps losing water after the repair.
Asks which part of the light system is leaking. Tests the conduit opening, niche body, gasket, faceplate, screw holes, and adjacent shell separately before recommending a specific repair for a specific confirmed source.
