Why Pressure Matters in Leak Detection
Pool plumbing runs at operating pressure when the pump is on. Return lines - the pressure side of the system - carry water being pushed from the pump to the pool. Suction lines carry water being pulled toward the pump. A leak on the pressure side loses water whenever the pump runs. A leak on the suction side may draw air instead of losing water, which shows up differently in how the pool behaves.
Pressure testing replicates something similar to operating conditions in a controlled way. By applying measured pressure to an isolated line and watching whether it holds or drops, the technician confirms whether that line is leaking and how significant the loss is over the test period.
What Affects How Much Water a Leak Loses
The size and geometry of the failure
A hairline crack at a glue joint loses less water than a split along the pipe body. A pinhole fitting failure loses less than a completely separated joint. The opening size determines how much water can pass through at any given pressure. Small openings under moderate pressure may lose surprisingly little - or surprisingly much, depending on how clean the opening is.
Pressure differential across the leak
The driving force for water movement through a leak is the difference between the pressure inside the pipe and the pressure on the outside. Higher internal pressure pushes more water through the same opening. As a general principle, doubling the pressure does not double the flow - the relationship depends on the failure geometry - but higher pressure does produce faster water loss through most failures.
Suction side vs pressure side
A suction line leak may draw air into the system rather than push water out - which is why air in the pump strainer or equipment is sometimes the first symptom of a suction line problem rather than water loss. A pressure side leak loses water directly. These two behaviors call for different diagnostic approaches.
Pipe age and condition
Old PVC becomes brittle and may have deteriorated glue joints, previous repair couplings, or stress cracks from ground movement or freeze events. The same pressure applied to new Schedule 40 PVC and 30-year-old brittle PVC produces very different risk profiles. This is why conservative pressure testing is the correct approach - the goal is to detect the leak, not to stress the plumbing further.
Conservative pressure is the field rule. There is no accuracy advantage to overpressurizing old or compromised pool plumbing. The pressure test result - hold or drop, how fast, how much - is the information you need. Forcing higher pressure than necessary to get a cleaner number creates risk of worsening an existing failure or creating a new one. Document starting pressure, ending pressure, duration, and result on every test.
What Pressure Testing Can Tell You
A pressure test tells you whether a line holds under controlled conditions and how quickly pressure drops if it does not hold. It does not tell you how much water the pool has been losing per day at operating pressure - that depends on operating pressure, pump run time, leak geometry, and backpressure from the soil around the pipe.
What the test confirms is that the line has a leak path. That confirmation is what justifies the next steps - acoustic work, trace gas, or excavation - to find where in the line the failure is located.
