What Are the Basics of Pool Leak Detection?

Start with the story, not the tools. Interview first, observe second, test third. A tool without a process just helps you guess faster.

Pool leak detection begins with proving whether a pool is actually losing water beyond normal evaporation. The correct sequence is: interview the customer to understand water loss history and behavior, visually observe the pool as a complete system, rule out non-leak causes, then test systematically using dye, pressure testing, and acoustic methods where indicated. Do Not Start With Tools

The most common mistake beginners make is reaching for equipment before they understand the problem. They dye a skimmer because skimmers commonly leak. They listen to a line because they have headphones. They pressure test because they have a manifold. None of that is systematic. It is guessing with expensive tools.

The basics of pool leak detection are not complicated. But they have to be done in the right order. The order matters because each step narrows the field and informs the next one.

The Correct Sequence

Interview the customer

Before you look at anything, ask the right questions. How much water is the pool losing and over what time period? Does it lose more with the pump on or off? Did the spa drain down overnight? Is there an autofill? Did the water stop dropping at a certain level? Was anything repaired, modified, or replaced recently? The answers shape the entire evaluation.

Observe the pool as a system

Walk the entire site before testing anything. Look at the equipment pad, plumbing, skimmers, lights, tile line, shell, spa, water features, deck, and surrounding ground. You are looking for wet areas, staining, settled soil, previous repairs, cracked fittings, and anything that does not match the normal appearance of a well-functioning pool.

Rule out non-leak causes

Not every water loss is a leak. Evaporation, splash-out, backwashing, autofill malfunction, overflow drain behavior, and equipment discharge can all account for water loss without any structural or plumbing failure. Eliminate these possibilities before attributing the loss to a leak.

Test systematically

Once you have a working theory from the interview and observation, test the most likely areas first. Dye test suspected structural locations - light niches, skimmer throats, floor cracks, fittings. Pressure test pool plumbing lines where conditions allow and where the evaluation points to plumbing. Work from the most likely to the least likely, not randomly.

Confirm and document

A suspected leak is not a confirmed leak. Dye movement at a crack is strong evidence. Pressure drop on an isolated line is strong evidence. Document what you found, how you tested it, what the result was, and what your finding is - confirmed, suspected, or no leak observed. Photograph everything.

Explain and recommend

Tell the customer what you found in plain language. Where the leak appears to be, what testing confirmed it, what the next step is, and who should handle it. Leave them with a report they can share with a repair contractor or use to make a decision.

Sequence cannot always be the same. Coverage cannot be skipped. The order of testing may change based on what the customer tells you and what you observe. But every area of the pool that can lose water gets evaluated. You do not skip the light niche because the skimmer looked bad. You finish the box you are in before opening the next one.

What the Basics Are Not

Pool leak detection basics are not about memorizing which tool finds which leak. They are about discipline - asking the right questions, observing before testing, testing before concluding, and documenting before leaving.

A beginner who follows the sequence correctly with basic equipment will outperform an experienced technician who grabs tools randomly on every job. The sequence is the skill.
