Why This Risk Exists
Old pool PVC becomes brittle. Glue joints from 20 or 30 years ago were sometimes applied poorly. Previous repair couplings may have been installed under stress and held only marginally. When a technician applies pressure to an already-compromised line, the weakest point may fail. The customer sees it as the technician breaking their plumbing. The technician believes the plumbing was already about to fail.
Both things can be true simultaneously. That is why the protection is not about being right - it is about having documented evidence of the condition before testing began.
The Pre-Test Protocol That Protects You
Photograph everything visible before testing
The equipment pad, exposed plumbing, valve condition, existing corrosion, previous repair patches, union conditions, and anything that already looks stressed or compromised. If that fitting fails during testing, the photo showing its pre-existing condition is your evidence that it was not in good shape before you arrived.
Communicate the plumbing condition to the customer
If the plumbing looks old, brittle, or previously repaired, say so before you test it. "The plumbing on this pool is aging, and I can see some prior repair work at the equipment pad. I use conservative pressure during testing, but with older plumbing there is always some possibility that a weak area could be affected by the test. Do you want to proceed?" That conversation puts the customer in the decision rather than surprising them with a problem afterward.
Use conservative pressure - always
The goal is to detect whether the line holds or drops. That requires enough pressure to produce a readable result over a reasonable test period - not the maximum pressure the line can theoretically handle. Conservative pressure on a healthy line produces clear results. Conservative pressure on a compromised line produces the same clear results with far less risk of causing additional damage.
Document the test completely
Record starting pressure, ending pressure, duration, what line was tested, how it was isolated, and what the result was. That documentation shows that the test was performed correctly and professionally. It also shows what pressure was used - which matters significantly if a claim is made about overpressurization.
Know when not to test
If the plumbing appears severely deteriorated, if a fitting is actively leaking or clearly about to fail, or if testing would create obvious risk - stop. Document why you did not test that line and what the visual condition was. A professional decision not to pressure test a compromised line is far better than causing a failure and facing a claim.
Proving a point is not worth creating a damage claim. The pressure test exists to detect leaks - not to force the plumbing to fail so the result is clear. Conservative pressure with good documentation produces the same diagnostic information as aggressive testing, with far less risk to the plumbing and far less exposure for the technician.
