Diagnosing Water Loss Behind a Raised Stone Waterfall Pool Feature

Water travels behind stone before it shows up somewhere else. The first step is isolating the feature - then testing what can be tested.

Water loss behind a raised stone waterfall can come from the supply plumbing, failed mortar joints between stones, deteriorated waterproofing behind the stone face, loose or cracked stone, the basin area, or fittings in the feature plumbing. Because water travels behind the stone before surfacing, the visible wet area is often not directly above the failure. The diagnostic approach starts with isolating the feature by comparing pool water loss with the waterfall on and with it off, then systematically testing the basin, plumbing, and structure of the feature rather than guessing at the stone face.

Why Behind the Stone Is Hard

A raised stone waterfall looks like one solid structure. Behind the stone face there is typically a concrete or gunite substrate, waterproofing membrane or coating, mortar bed, and then the stone itself. Water that enters through a gap in the mortar, a crack in the substrate, or a failed fitting can travel freely behind the stone and exit anywhere - sometimes several feet away from where it entered.

That is why a wet spot at the base of a waterfall does not tell you where the water entered. It tells you where it stopped traveling.

Start With Isolation

The most important first step is determining whether the pool loses water with the waterfall feature running and whether it stops or slows when the feature is turned off. This comparison tells you immediately whether the water feature circuit is involved in the water loss or whether the pool is losing water independently of the feature.

Where the Water May Be Going

Supply plumbing to the feature

The line from the pool equipment to the waterfall head or distribution points can develop leaks the same way any other pool plumbing can. Pressure test the supply line where plugs can be seated. Water features with open plumbing ends cannot be plugged and tested in the standard way - document that limitation.

Failed mortar between stones

Mortar joints between stones crack and open over time, especially in areas that are constantly wet, exposed to temperature changes, or subject to ground movement. Water entering through failed mortar can travel behind the stone structure and exit far from the entry point.

Deteriorated waterproofing behind the stone

The waterproofing membrane or coating applied to the substrate behind the stone degrades over time. Failed waterproofing allows water from the feature to penetrate the structure rather than return to the pool. This is a repair and waterproofing specialist issue when confirmed.

The basin or catch area

The basin at the base of a raised waterfall is a separate structure that holds water before it is returned to the pool. The basin has its own shell, fittings, and potential leak points. Watch the basin water level independently when the feature is isolated to determine whether the basin itself is losing water.

Splash and overspray

Not all water loss at a waterfall feature is a leak. Heavy overspray, wind-driven splash, and water landing outside the intended return path can account for significant water loss. Document spray patterns and note whether loss changes with wind conditions.

Do not include waterfall features in a base residential price without understanding the added time and complexity. A raised stone waterfall with a basin, return plumbing, and a hidden substrate requires separate evaluation beyond the main pool. Scope it before pricing it, and make sure the customer understands that the feature evaluation is an addition to the standard pool evaluation.
