Why Textured Finishes Complicate Micro-Leak Detection
A smooth white plaster pool surface allows dye to move clearly and shows surface cracks with reasonable visibility. A Pebble Tec, quartz, aggregate, or glass bead finish is fundamentally different. The surface is rough, multi-tonal, and full of small gaps between individual stones or quartz particles. Cracks can hide in those gaps. Water paths can run behind the finish rather than appearing on the surface. Dye placed near a suspected area may disperse through the texture without showing a clear pull toward any single point.
That does not mean evaluation is useless on textured finishes. It means the evaluation produces a different quality of finding than it would on a smooth surface - and that difference has to be communicated honestly.
What to Look For on Textured Finishes
Water level behavior
Does the pool stop dropping at a consistent level? A textured finish leak that corresponds to a specific elevation - a step edge, a bench level, a particular wall area - will often reveal itself through a consistent stopping point in the water loss pattern.
Staining and calcium deposits
Water moving through a crack over time leaves mineral deposits, staining, or calcium trails on the surrounding surface. These patterns can reveal where water has been moving even when the active crack is invisible beneath the texture.
Surface separation or finish lifting
Areas where the pebble or quartz finish has separated from the underlying shell, or where the material sits proud of the surrounding surface, indicate delamination. Delaminated areas can allow water to travel behind the finish before exiting elsewhere.
Hollow areas
Tapping lightly on the shell in air can reveal hollow areas where the finish has separated from the underlying concrete. Hollow spots are not always active leaks, but they can indicate areas where the bond between finish and shell has failed - which can be a water path.
Previous patches and repairs
A pool with repair history on a textured finish may have areas where the patch material has since failed or where the original crack reopened. Look for color variation, texture changes, and areas where repair material is visible or missing.
Dye testing under calm conditions
Dye testing on textured surfaces requires even more care than on smooth plaster. The texture can disperse dye in multiple directions without active water movement. Patience, very slow syringe release, excellent body control, and good visibility are all required to produce a readable result. A negative dye result on a textured surface is less conclusive than on a smooth surface.
Document limits clearly on textured finishes. If the evaluation cannot pinpoint a specific crack or hole through the texture, the honest finding is a suspected area of finish, shell, or waterproofing concern - not a confirmed leak at an exact location. Saying "suspected shell or waterproofing issue in this zone" with supporting observations is a professional finding. Inventing a precise location the evidence does not support is not.
