Cold Joint Failure in Spas Added to Existing Pools

A cold joint is where new concrete met old concrete. When that connection fails, water can move between the pool and spa without a visible crack in either structure.

A cold joint failure in a spa added to an existing pool occurs where the new spa concrete or gunite was poured or shot against the existing pool shell. If the original surface was not properly prepared, bonded, and waterproofed at the connection point, the cold joint can become a path for water movement between the pool and spa structures. Signs include water loss between the pool and spa that changes when one is isolated from the other, cracking or separation at the connection zone, loose or failed tile and grout at the joint, staining, and dye movement under calm conditions at the joint area. Report language should use observed and suspected rather than engineering conclusions about the structural bond.

Scope note: A leak detector can document water movement, visible conditions, and dye test results at a cold joint. Construction conclusions about whether the joint was properly bonded, whether the contractor met code, and whether the original work was defective belong to a qualified pool contractor, structural engineer, or waterproofing specialist - not a leak detection report.

Use careful language: observed, suspected, confirmed by dye, recommend further evaluation. Do not make engineering or construction liability conclusions.

What a Cold Joint Is

A cold joint forms whenever new concrete or gunite is placed against existing, cured concrete without proper preparation and bonding. In pool construction, this happens most commonly when a spa is added to an existing pool after the original pool was already built and finished.

If the connection zone was properly prepared - old surface cleaned and roughened, bonding agent applied, waterproofing carried through the joint - the cold joint may hold indefinitely. If any of those steps were skipped or done incorrectly, the cold joint becomes a weak area that can allow water movement between the two structures.

How to Identify a Possible Cold Joint Failure

Spa draining toward the pool or pool losing to spa

If the spa drops when isolated from the pool, or if the pool level changes when the spa is isolated, the leak may be at the structural connection between them rather than in the plumbing. Test each body of water separately with the connecting plumbing valved off.

Cracking or separation at the connection zone

Look for visible cracking, gap, or separation where the spa structure meets the pool shell. This zone is often at or near the tile line, the step or bench level between the pool and spa, or along a shared wall. Cracks here warrant careful dye testing under calm conditions.

Failed tile or grout at the joint

Tile and grout that runs across the cold joint often fails first because the two concrete bodies move slightly differently over time. Loose tile, open grout joints, and gaps between tile and the pool surface at the connection zone are signs the joint may be opening.

Staining and mineral deposits at the joint

Water moving through the cold joint over time leaves mineral deposits, staining, or efflorescence along the path. These deposits can reveal where water has been traveling even when the joint appears to be closed at the moment of evaluation.

Dye movement at the joint under calm conditions

With the pump off and water calm, dye placed carefully at a suspected gap or crack in the joint area may show active pull. This supports the cold joint as an active leak path. Document the result with photos and note the exact location.

Report language matters on cold joint findings. "Observed crack and dye movement at the pool-to-spa connection zone, consistent with a suspected cold joint leak. Recommend evaluation by a qualified pool contractor or waterproofing specialist before repair planning." That is a professional finding. "The contractor failed to properly bond the cold joint" is an engineering and legal conclusion that does not belong in a leak detection report.
