How Do You Inspect a Pool Waterfall for Leaks?

A waterfall can fool any technician. The water is supposed to move -- and water can exit through splash, wind, stone, and waterproofing long before it ever finds a broken pipe.

Inspect a waterfall by first comparing water loss with the feature off versus the feature running. Then examine the pump, plumbing, valves, basin, spillway, stonework, mortar joints, waterproofing behind the stone, and any wet soil or erosion around the structure. A waterfall leak may not involve broken plumbing at all -- it may be splash-out, wind drift, water tracking behind stone, failed waterproofing, or a cracked basin.

Why Waterfalls Require a Different Inspection Approach

A waterfall is designed to move water. That movement creates multiple ways for water to exit the pool system that have nothing to do with a broken pipe. Wet rock after shutdown, damp soil behind the feature, and visible mineral staining can all be caused by splash-out, poor waterproofing, or stone porosity -- not a plumbing failure.

The inspection must separate several different leak types before any repair is recommended:

What Must Be Separated

Pool shell loss -- the pool itself is leaking, independent of the waterfall feature.

Waterfall plumbing loss -- a pipe, fitting, or pump connection is leaking underground or at the pad.

Basin or trough leak -- the collection structure holding water is cracked or failing.

Waterproofing failure -- water is moving through the stone structure because the waterproofing membrane behind the veneer has failed.

Splash-out or wind drift -- water is being physically displaced outside the pool during operation. No pipe or structure is failing.

Water tracking behind stone -- water runs behind the stone face and exits through the wall or footer instead of returning to the pool.

This is the most important diagnostic step for a waterfall inspection. Compare measured water loss under both conditions over equal time periods.

Waterfall Off

If the pool loses water with the feature off, the primary leak is in the pool shell, plumbing, or fittings -- not the waterfall feature itself. The waterfall inspection still matters, but it is not the only problem.

Waterfall Running

If water loss only occurs when the feature runs, the source is tied to the waterfall -- but that could be plumbing, the basin, stone waterproofing, splash-out, wind drift, or water tracking behind the stone face.

Recommend Repair and Verify Under the Same Condition

Verify by running the waterfall under the same operating conditions that produced the loss. If water loss only appeared after four hours of operation, a five-minute test is not sufficient verification.

Critical Testing Notes

Never dye test while water is flowing over the stone -- the current will carry dye away from any leak point and make the result meaningless.

A pressure test on the waterfall line proves whether the pipe holds pressure. It does not prove the basin, stonework, or waterproofing is sound. These are separate inspections requiring separate methods.

If a pressure test clears the plumbing and loss still occurs when the feature runs, shift focus entirely to the structure: basin, mortar, waterproofing, spillway tracking, and splash.
