How Paver Systems Behave Differently From Concrete

Why Pavers Complicate Leak Locating

A concrete deck forces water to move under a solid slab. Pavers have joints, bedding sand, compacted base rock, edge restraints, and drainage paths between each individual paver. Water from a pipe break can move horizontally through the bedding layer, wash out the base in multiple directions, sink pavers over a wide area, or appear through joints that are far from the break.

Pavers can be removed and reset, which gives the technician more access flexibility than concrete. But easier access does not mean easier diagnosis. The same rule applies: prove the circuit, map the pipe path, locate the break, then remove only what the evidence supports.

Separate Pool Leak From Other Moisture Sources

Not every sunken or wet paver is caused by a pool leak. Before doing any plumbing testing, consider these other sources:

Irrigation system leak
Rainwater drainage issue
Downspout discharge
Natural low spot in the grade
Poor original paver installation
Soil settlement (non-water-related)
Landscape runoff
Burrowing animal activity

A pool leak should be tied to confirmed pool water loss -- measured at the pool -- and supported by pressure test evidence. The wet pavers alone are not enough.

Pressure test the lines associated with the suspected area. A line that fails a pressure test confirms which circuit is leaking. This is the evidence base for everything that follows. Do not lift pavers before this step.

Map Settlement Against the Pipe Path

Document where pavers are settled, loose, or showing joint sand washout. Overlay this against the confirmed pipe route. Where settlement and pipe path intersect -- especially near fittings, transition points, or prior repairs -- is the priority investigation zone.

Step 05

Use Acoustic and Trace Gas Locating

Introduce controlled air or an air/water mix into the confirmed circuit. Use acoustic listening equipment or trace gas along the mapped pipe path. Pavers allow some sound transmission but paver base sand absorbs and disperses sound differently than a concrete slab. Trace gas can travel up through sand and joint sand and is often effective under paver systems.

Step 06

Targeted Paver Removal -- Document Before Lifting

Before removing any pavers, document:

Remove only the pavers the evidence supports. Store removed pavers in order if they need to be reset in the original pattern.

Step 07

Repair, Rebuild Base, and Retest

Repair the confirmed break. Rebuild the washed-out or disturbed base correctly before resetting pavers -- a properly compacted base is the only protection against future settlement in the same area. Pressure test the circuit again before closing the work area. Document the post-repair result.
