Items in gold are pool-related and confirmed through testing. All other items produce similar visible symptoms and require separate investigation. Do not start removing travertine to look for a pool leak until pool-related sources are confirmed through testing.

Confirm Pool Water Loss Is Occurring

Measure the pool water loss directly. Turn off the autofill. Mark the water level and measure over 24 hours with the pump off and 24 hours with it running. Confirm the loss is real and tied to the pool system -- not evaporation or autofill compensation masking a loss that does not exist.

Test Nearby Shell Points and Fittings First

Before doing any underground testing, dye test the skimmer throat, return fitting faces, light niche, coping joints, and shell cracks near the suspected area. Travertine used as coping sits directly at the bond beam -- a shell or bond beam leak near the coping may produce travertine staining that looks like an underground plumbing problem. Confirm or rule out these above-water sources before going underground.
