Why Plugs Slip
A plug holds because it grips the inside of the pipe. Algae, slime, scale, a smooth fitting, a tapered pipe, or a worn fitting can all reduce that grip. When pressure builds behind the plug, the plug is pushed toward the pool. If the pipe surface is slick, the plug moves. This is field reality -- not a setup failure.

Why Back Pressure Matters
Back pressure pushes against the plug from behind. The greater the pressure, the greater the ejection force. If the plug is not gripping well, adding more pressure does not fix the grip problem -- it increases the risk of the plug blowing out. More pressure is not the solution when the setup is not holding.

What to Do When a Plug Slips
- Wear protective gloves
- Clean the inside of the pipe with a wire brush
- Clean the plug face and rubber
- Reset the plug
- Try the test again
- If it slips again, clean both the pipe and plug a second time
- Repeat until the plug holds well enough to test
- If still slipping, lower the back pressure
- If the plug cannot hold at any workable pressure, document the limitation
This is not a guaranteed fix. It is the practical field response to a real problem. Some fittings will not hold a plug reliably regardless of how clean they are, and the honest response is to document it and move on.
Never stand directly in line with a pressurized plug. A plug blowout under pressure can cause injury. Always use eye protection, gloves, and controlled pressure. Do not force a test setup that is not holding by increasing pressure -- that makes a blowout more likely, not less.
False Failed Tests
A slipping plug creates a false failed pressure test. The gauge drops because the plug moved or leaked -- not because the underground line is leaking. This is one of the most common sources of bad test results in field pressure testing. Plug verification must happen before any gauge reading is interpreted. If the plug slipped, the test result is not valid -- regardless of what the gauge shows.

Ask whether there has been recent algae treatment or whether the pool has been sitting unmanaged.
Inspect the return fitting before placing the plug. Note the pipe size, depth, and surface condition.
Check plug size against the fitting. Inspect plug rubber condition before the test begins.
Clean. Reset. Verify. Apply controlled pressure only after the plug is confirmed holding.
If the plug held and the gauge dropped, that is the finding. If the plug slipped, the finding is inconclusive.
Document plug slippage in the report. Note that the test could not be completed under normal conditions if applicable.
Plug slippage is one of those field realities that no course can fully eliminate. Some fittings are going to be slick, algae-covered, tapered, or shallow. The plug is going to want to come out.
My procedure: clean the pipe, clean the plug, reset, try again. If it slips a second time, I clean both again and lower my back pressure. If it still will not hold, I document it. I write in the report that normal pressure testing of that return could not be completed because the plug would not hold in the fitting -- and I note what I did observe.
What you never do is call the line failed when the plug slipped. The gauge dropped because the test setup failed -- not because the underground plumbing failed. Those are not the same thing.
