How Do You Explain the Bucket Test to a Pool Leak Customer?

The bucket test compares pool water loss to evaporation. It is a useful screening tool - and it has real limits that customers need to understand.

The bucket test is explained to customers as a simple evaporation comparison: a bucket of water placed on a pool step loses water to evaporation the same way the pool does, so comparing how much each drops over 24 hours provides a rough indicator of whether the pool is losing more water than evaporation alone can account for. Customers should also understand what can interfere with the result - rain, wind, autofill, splash-out, water features, and pump operation. The bucket test is a screening tool, not a replacement for systematic leak detection.

What the Bucket Test Does

The bucket test answers one question: is the pool losing more water than evaporation accounts for? It does that by giving evaporation something to compare against - a bucket of water sitting in the same environment, exposed to the same sun, wind, and temperature as the pool.

If the pool drops more than the bucket over a set period, that suggests the pool may be losing water beyond evaporation. If they drop about the same, evaporation may be the primary explanation for the water loss.

How to explain it to a customer

"The bucket test works by putting a bucket of water on a pool step and marking both the pool water level and the bucket water level at the same time. After 24 hours, you compare how much each one dropped. The bucket and the pool are exposed to the same sun and weather, so they should lose roughly the same amount to evaporation. If the pool dropped significantly more than the bucket, that points toward water leaving somewhere other than evaporation."

What Can Affect the Result

Autofill left on

If the autofill is running during the test, it replaces water and hides the actual drop. The autofill must be off for the test to mean anything.

Rain or wind

Rain adds water to the pool and may not add the same amount to the bucket. Wind can increase evaporation unpredictably. Run the test in stable weather conditions when possible.

Splash-out and water features

Pools with waterfalls, deck jets, or heavy swim activity lose water through splash-out. That loss shows up in the pool but not the bucket, which can make the test look like a leak when the real cause is splash.

Backwashing or equipment discharge

If the filter was backwashed during the test period, that lost water affects the pool level but not the bucket. The customer needs to avoid backwashing during the test.

The bucket test is a screening tool, not a leak confirmation. A positive bucket test result - pool dropping more than the bucket - suggests a leak is worth investigating. It does not confirm where the leak is, what kind of leak it is, or whether it is structural or plumbing. A professional evaluation is still needed to find and document the source.
