How Do You Explain Dye Testing to a Pool Leak Customer?

Dye shows whether water is being pulled into a suspected location. The result depends on conditions - calm water, good positioning, and whether the leak is active at that moment.

Dye testing is explained to customers as a method of placing a small amount of dye near a suspected leak location and watching whether the water movement pulls the dye toward that area. An active leak pulls dye toward it. The result depends on calm water conditions, correct positioning close to the suspected area, good visibility, and whether the leak is currently active. Customers should understand that a negative dye result does not always rule out a leak - conditions matter. Customers do not need to understand dye chemistry. They need to understand what you are looking for and what the result means - including its limits.

Standard explanation for a customer

"Dye testing works by placing a small amount of dye near the area we suspect is leaking - a crack, a fitting, a light niche, a skimmer area. If water is being pulled into that spot, the dye may move toward it. That movement tells us water is passing through that location. If the dye just floats away without being pulled, that suggests there is no active pull at that spot under the current conditions."

The Word That Matters - May

Dye testing is useful, but the result depends on conditions that cannot always be perfectly controlled. That is why the honest explanation includes the word "may." The dye may pull toward the leak - not always will.

When the customer asks why dye did not confirm the leak

"A negative dye result does not always mean there is no leak at that location. It means we did not observe active water movement under the conditions we tested. The water could be moving very slowly, the leak may only be active under different pump conditions, or the conditions did not allow a clear reading. That is why we combine dye testing with pressure testing and the overall water loss pattern - no single test gives us the whole picture."

Bad dye testing creates false results. A technician who moves too fast, kicks water with their body or hand, or places dye carelessly can see dye movement that has nothing to do with a leak.
