A technician who can't make a test work often reaches for higher pressure. That is almost always the wrong response. Higher pressure on old plumbing can damage aging PVC, crack brittle skimmer bodies, blow out old glue joints, move plugs, and create stored-energy hazards. A better diagnosis comes from improving the setup -- not increasing the force.
The Anderson pressure principles explain why: air compresses and stores energy at higher pressure, making air testing increasingly hazardous as pressure rises. At any given pressure, air will escape through a small setup leak faster than water through a pipe crack -- making the test harder to read, not easier.
Use this: "Professional pool leak technicians use controlled low-pressure testing appropriate to the specific line, pipe condition, plug rating, and test method. There is no one PSI that applies to every pool."
Avoid this: "Always test pool lines at ___ PSI."
Has the pool been repaired before? How old is it? Has the plumbing ever been modified? These history answers affect how conservatively the test pressure should be selected.
Understand the plumbing layout, pipe age, fitting condition, and plug compatibility before selecting a test pressure. The PSI must fit the specific system -- not a generic standard.
Narrow the test to one circuit at a time. The PSI appropriate for a return line may not be appropriate for an old skimmer body or a thin-wall fitting in a fiberglass pool.
Apply controlled, conservative pressure matched to the specific line. Monitor the gauge. If the result is inconclusive, verify the setup -- not raise the pressure.
Document the test pressure, test medium, duration, and start and end readings. If the setup or conditions limited the test, note that in the report.
A failed test at controlled low pressure recommends further locating. A test that is inconclusive because of setup limitations recommends revisiting the setup or trying a different method.

Water does not store the same kind of energy, making water-loaded testing generally safer. Air testing requires strict controls and professional handling.
