Separation at the joint where the skimmer meets the pool shell. Confirmed with calm-water dye testing at the throat. Does not require line testing.

Some skimmers have equalizer ports that connect to the main drain or a secondary line. These can fail independently and may confuse the skimmer line test if not accounted for.

Air in the pump basket, bubbles returning to the pool, loss of prime, or noisy pump operation may suggest a suction-side air entry point. These are clues that direct the inspection toward the skimmer system.
They do not prove an underground skimmer line break. Air in the pump can also come from a lid O-ring, low water level, a valve not fully closed, an equipment-side fitting, or a skimmer throat leak creating suction-side air entry.
Many failed skimmer pressure tests are actually failed setups, not failed pipes. A skimmer with a dual port, an equalizer line, a connection to the main drain circuit, or a valve that doesn't fully close can fail the test even when the underground line has no defect. A technician who doesn't understand the skimmer configuration before inserting plugs will produce unreliable results.

Skimmer lines are suction-side plumbing and often have more complex geometry than return lines -- including bends, transitions, and varying elevations. Air from a leaking plug or a loose manifold connection escapes the circuit faster than water through a pipe crack. A technician who misreads this effect will conclude the skimmer line is broken when the test setup is the actual problem.
Air in the pump? Loss of prime? Water loss with pump off? These clues direct the inspection toward the suction system -- but they do not identify which part of the suction system has failed.

Dye test the skimmer throat, body, and pipe connection first. If those are clear and symptoms continue, the underground line becomes the primary remaining suspect.

A confirmed, repeatable pressure drop on a properly isolated skimmer circuit supports a possible skimmer line leak. Document conditions, plug placement limitations, and what was not included in the test.
Further locating before any excavation. Acoustic listening, pipe locating, or trace gas narrows the location. Verify the line holds after repair is complete.
Is every skimmer leak a skimmer line leak?
No. The leak may be at the skimmer throat seam, skimmer body, pipe connection at the bottom of the canister, equalizer line, or the underground suction line. Each requires a different test to confirm.
