Ask: how fast is the pool losing water? Does the level drop near the skimmer? Does the pump pull air? Were there prior repairs? Does the loss change pump-on or pump-off? This history shapes every step that follows.
Dye testing at the skimmer throat requires calm water. Pump off. Returns off. Autofill off. Water features off. Wait for surface movement to settle. Wind and suction can distort dye and create false readings.
Before any dye is used, photograph and inspect:
Use a flashlight and mirror. Inspect the basket well, all inside corners, pipe openings at the bottom, and the equalizer port if present. Look for cracks, stress marks, old patch material, or loose material. Test the pipe opening at the bottom of the skimmer with dye. If there is an equalizer port, test around it. Look for any pull into the pipe connection area or wall interface inside the basket.
Inspect the skimmer opening at the pool wall below water level. Check the connection of the skimmer body to the pool wall. Inspect tile grout and the area around the skimmer opening. Dye test around the faceplate or mounting plate if applicable.

Should dye testing be done with the pump running?
Usually no. Moving water distorts the dye and can create the appearance of movement that is not a leak. Calm-water conditions -- pump off, returns settled, no wind -- give the most reliable dye test results at the skimmer throat.
How do you know if the skimmer line is leaking?
A skimmer line leak usually requires more than visual inspection and dye testing of the body. A trained professional may isolate and test the skimmer suction line using pressure or vacuum testing, hydrophone listening, or pipe locating.
Can old epoxy hide a skimmer leak?
Yes. Old repair material can cover cracks, gaps, or failed seams. It should be carefully documented and the area should still be dye tested -- active leakage can occur underneath or around prior repair material.
