Why Pool Plumbing Is Harder to Hear -- The PVC Problem

PVC transmits leak sounds at lower frequencies and over much shorter distances than metal pipes. Metal pipes transmit sounds louder and farther. PVC absorbs and dampens sound more quickly through surrounding soil.
This means hydrophone listening on pool plumbing must be done close to the suspected leak location. Pressurizing the line helps amplify the acoustic signal. Without pressurization, small PVC leaks may produce no audible signal at all.
