How to Verify a Leak Inside a Pool Structural Perimeter Expansion Joint

Verifying a leak at a pool structural perimeter expansion joint requires understanding what the joint is, where it sits relative to the pool waterline, and whether the evidence supports pool water loss at that location rather than deck drainage, groundwater intrusion, or surface water. The process includes documenting water loss, inspecting the joint visually for missing sealant, cracks, staining, and movement indicators, and dye testing the joint area if it is in contact with pool water under appropriate conditions. If the evidence points to deck drainage, structural movement, or issues above the waterline, the leak detector should refer those observations to a deck contractor, waterproofing specialist, or engineer rather than claiming pool leak responsibility for conditions that may not be pool-related.

What the Expansion Joint Is and Is Not

A perimeter expansion joint that sits above the normal operating water level is not in direct contact with pool water during normal conditions. A structural leak through an above-waterline joint requires pool water to rise above that level, splash to that level, or travel through some other path to reach the joint. If the joint is above the waterline, confirm the water loss pattern before attributing the loss to that joint location.

Does the water level stabilize at the joint?

If the pool water level drops and stabilizes at an elevation that corresponds to the expansion joint location, that is a strong supporting indicator. A pool that consistently stops dropping at a specific level that matches a joint elevation points toward that joint as a leak boundary.

Dye testing the joint under appropriate conditions

With the pump off and water calm, dye applied carefully at the joint face below the waterline may show active water movement through the joint. Dye drawn into the joint or carried away from the pool side confirms an active leak path. Document the exact location, depth, and dye behavior observed.

Separate deck observations from pool evidence

A joint that is cracked, gapped, or failed in a deck-only section may be a deck drainage or structural movement problem - not a pool leak. Wet soil near a failed deck joint may be from rainwater, surface drainage, or deck saturation rather than pool water. Document the deck observation separately from any pool water loss evidence and do not merge them into a single pool leak conclusion without direct evidence connecting the two.

Deck contractors, waterproofing specialists, and engineers handle expansion joint design and repair.
