What Thermal Imaging Actually Detects
A thermal camera reads surface temperature differences. It does not see through concrete, soil, or water. What it can detect is the thermal effect of moisture or water movement - areas that are cooler or warmer than the surrounding surface because water has saturated the material beneath.
In pool leak work, this can sometimes reveal a wet area under a deck, a plumbing line path where water is moving, or a spot where ground saturation has affected the surface temperature. That information can help direct further investigation.
The key word is "sometimes." Thermal imaging in an outdoor pool environment is subject to significant interference from factors that have nothing to do with a leak.
What Interferes With Thermal Readings
Sun and shade patterns
Sunlight heats different areas of a deck at different rates depending on exposure, time of day, and whether structures or landscaping cast shade. A shaded area will appear cooler in a thermal image regardless of whether there is moisture present.
Deck material differences
Different deck materials - concrete, travertine, pavers, cool deck, tile - absorb and release heat at different rates. Variations in thermal readings along a deck can reflect material differences rather than moisture.
Recent rainfall or irrigation
Rain or irrigation water on or near the deck creates thermal signatures that mimic leak-related moisture. A reading taken within 24 to 48 hours of rainfall should be interpreted with caution.
Pool equipment heat
Heaters, pumps, and other pool equipment generate heat that radiates into the surrounding area. Plumbing lines carrying heated water also show thermal variation that reflects operating temperature, not leaks.
Soil and subsurface variation
Different soil types, fill material, and subsurface conditions affect how heat moves through the ground. An anomaly in a thermal reading may reflect a soil condition that predates any leak.
Where Thermal Imaging Adds Value
Helpful when used as a guide
- Identifying areas of consistent surface temperature variation worth investigating further
- Tracing plumbing line paths under a deck when no as-built drawings exist
- Flagging areas of sustained moisture over multiple readings
- Supporting a finding already suggested by pressure testing or water loss behavior
Not reliable as standalone confirmation
- Confirming a leak location without supporting test data
- Ruling out a leak in an area that showed no thermal anomaly
- Pinpointing an exact break location in a line
- Any conclusion reached from thermal imaging alone
Do not sell thermal imaging as a guaranteed pinpoint tool. Customers who hear "we use thermal imaging" may believe it means the camera shows exactly where the leak is. It does not. It shows temperature differences that may indicate moisture. The distinction matters when you are explaining findings and defending your process. Always describe thermal imaging honestly - as one clue in a larger investigation, not as the answer.
Best Conditions for Thermal Imaging
If you use thermal imaging, give yourself the best chance of a useful reading:
- Evaluate early morning when sun heating has not yet affected the deck surface
- Avoid readings taken within 24 to 48 hours of rainfall or irrigation
- Note all sources of potential interference before interpreting results
- Compare multiple readings over time when possible rather than relying on one scan
- Use pressure testing results to guide where to focus the thermal evaluation
Is It Worth Adding to Your Service?
Thermal imaging equipment is a significant cost. For most residential pool leak detection, pressure testing and acoustic equipment provide more reliable, actionable results. Thermal imaging may add value in specific markets, commercial work, or as a supplementary offering when the equipment is already accessible.
The question before adding any tool is: does this help me find leaks I would otherwise miss, and can I explain its limitations honestly to customers? If the answer to both is yes, the tool has a place in your practice.
