Photos Taken Before Testing Serve a Different Purpose Than Findings Photos
Most technicians understand they need to photograph their findings -- the leak location, the dye movement, the crack, the damaged fitting. What gets skipped far more often is the documentation that happens before any of that: the arrival state of the property.
Pre-visit photos are institutional memory. They establish what the property looked like, what the water level was, what the equipment condition was, and what pre-existing damage existed -- before the technician touched anything. When a customer calls two weeks later claiming a technician cracked their tile or damaged a fitting, the pre-visit photos are what establishes whether that condition existed before the visit.
Without pre-visit documentation, the technician has no evidence. They only have their word against the customer's. That is a difficult place to be.
When a dispute arises weeks after a visit, the technician will not remember every detail of the property condition at arrival. The customer will not remember accurately either -- they will remember what they believe, and confirmation bias will fill in the gaps in their favor.
