Diagnosing a Mystery Pool Leak When Solar Heating Cycles Off

The leak may only appear when solar runs, when solar stops, or when the diverter valve changes position. Pay attention to cycle timing - then test with solar isolated.

A solar pool heating system can confuse a leak diagnosis because water loss may only occur under specific operating conditions - when the solar circuit is active, when it shuts off and the valve diverts flow, when the roof panels drain down after the pump stops, or when a failing check valve allows siphoning. Testing the pool in only one condition may miss the pattern entirely. The diagnostic approach involves comparing water loss with the solar system running, with the solar system isolated, and noting the relationship between water loss events and the solar cycle schedule. If isolation to the solar side confirms the loss, a solar, pool, or roofing professional handles the roof component.

Why Solar Systems Create Confusing Leak Patterns

A solar pool heating system adds a second pump circuit - or a diverted branch of the main pump circuit - that sends water up to roof-mounted panels, through them, and back to the pool. When the system cycles on and off, a diverter valve shifts position. Water in the roof panels drains back when the system shuts off. Check valves control where water can flow.

Any of those components can create a water loss pattern that only shows up at certain times of day, during solar operation, or immediately after solar shuts down. If the technician only evaluates the pool in one condition, the pattern may be invisible.

The Operating-Condition Patterns That Point to Solar

Pool loses more water when solar runs

If the pool water level drops faster during solar operating hours than during periods when solar is bypassed, the leak is likely in the solar circuit - roof panels, header pipes, valves, or fittings in the solar loop.

Pool loses water when solar shuts off

When the solar system shuts down, the diverter valve changes position and water in the roof panels drains back. If a check valve has failed, water may siphon backward through the solar return rather than draining correctly. This shows up as a brief but recurring loss event at the end of each solar cycle.

Pool holds when solar is bypassed

If the pool water level holds steady when the solar system is valved off - and then drops when solar is re-enabled - the isolation test has confirmed that the loss is on the solar side. That finding directs the repair to the solar system, not the pool shell or standard plumbing.

Diverter valve position and behavior

A diverter valve that is stuck, failing, or leaking internally can cause water to travel through the solar loop when it should be bypassed. Checking valve position and whether the valve responds correctly to the controller is part of evaluating the solar connection.

Pay attention to valve position and system cycles. A technician who evaluates the pool only when solar is off may find nothing wrong - because the loss only occurs when the valve shifts and the system pressurizes. Asking the customer about when the water loss is most noticeable and how the solar system operates is part of the intake conversation on any pool with solar heating. Test the pool in both conditions when possible before drawing conclusions.

Roof Access and Scope

If the isolation test confirms the solar side as the loss source, inspecting the roof-mounted panels requires roof access. For a one-story roof that is safely accessible with appropriate equipment, a trained technician can look for wet areas, dripping fittings, failed panel connections, and header pipe condition. For a two-story or steep roof, fall risk is real - refer roof access to a qualified solar, roofing, or pool professional rather than taking that risk to complete the evaluation.
