The most common buying mistake is purchasing the most interesting-looking tool first. Acoustic equipment, advanced trace gas rigs, and specialty cameras are appealing -- but they only produce value when the technician already understands what circuit is leaking and where to point the tool. The sequence below matches the order the job actually happens in the field.
Waterproof flashlight, small inspection mirror, probe, tape measure, marker, and phone or camera. These are the first tools used on every job and require no training to start using productively.
Fluorescent leak dye, 50ml syringes, 25-gauge needles (buy extra -- they disappear fast), and extension tubes. Dye testing is the single most important confirming skill to develop first. It is cheap, direct, and forces the technician to understand how water actually moves.
Mask, snorkel, weight belt, and underwater flashlight. Underwater visual inspection and dye testing require the ability to hold still near fittings without stirring water. This is the physical skill foundation.
Nylon closed plugs in four sizes (120N, 140N, 145N, 155N), inflatable closed plugs (550, 555), inflatable open plugs (550BP-CPH, 555BP-CPH, 557BP), and extension hoses. Order by part number only -- the number encodes the size. Wrong plugs make pressure testing unreliable.
Airbrush compressor (controlled, low-pressure -- not an automotive compressor), pressure manifold, and 25 ft + 50 ft air hoses with quick-connect couplings. Pressure testing is the primary method for identifying failed plumbing circuits.
The Fisher XLT-17 is the standard entry-level choice. A hydrophone belongs in the starter kit, not on a "buy later" list. It is a required tool in a professional leak detection stack. Learn it, understand its limits, and use it as one part of a system -- not as the whole system.
O-ring lubricant, soap and water spray bottle for air leak checks, channel lock pliers, 3 lb mallet, and inspection mirror. Many leaks and air problems are at the equipment pad. These tools cost almost nothing and solve problems that expensive electronics cannot.
