Why It Belongs in the Kit Despite That Number

A 35% success rate is not a reason to leave the hydrophone out of the kit. On the jobs where acoustic listening is the decisive factor, having it is everything. The technician who does not carry one cannot use it when it matters.

The point of the 35% figure is not "don't buy a hydrophone." It is "don't buy a hydrophone thinking it replaces training, technique, and the other tools." The technician who believes the hydrophone will find every leak stops developing the skills that find the other 65%.

What Limits Hydrophone Effectiveness

Acoustic listening in a pool environment is affected by a range of factors that reduce or eliminate the signal. Understanding these in advance prevents misinterpretation of a silent result as "no leak."

Environmental noise -- traffic, wind, nearby equipment
Pump and water feature noise in the pool
Silicone or sealant inside a light conduit muffling the signal
Butyl tape in the light conduit reducing vibration
Debris inside a crack slowing or blocking vibration
Leak traveling through soil or sand before reaching a hard surface
Small leak volume -- too little flow to create detectable sound
Leak in a location where the sensor cannot be placed close enough
Echo and reverberation off pool walls masking the signal location
Return jets, waterfalls, or automatic cleaners creating competing noise
Electrically noisy environments near pool equipment

When any of these conditions are present, the hydrophone may produce no useful signal even when an active leak is directly below the sensor. The silent result is a limitation of the conditions -- not a clearance of the area.

  • Work reliably through muffling mediums (silicone, butyl, debris)

  • Identify structural crack depth or repair scope

The Technician Finds the Leak -- Not the Equipment

This is the most important principle in pool leak detection. The hydrophone, the pressure gauge, the dye syringe, and the trace gas sniffer are all instruments. They produce data. The technician interprets that data using training, logic, and systematic procedure.

A technician with great equipment and no training will misread results and reach wrong conclusions. A technician with solid training and basic equipment will find leaks that stump someone who spent five times as much on tools without the equivalent investment in understanding the process.

Buy the hydrophone. But invest equally -- or more -- in learning the H.U.N.T.E.R. Method, understanding pressure testing isolation, dye testing technique, and the diagnostic reasoning that makes every tool more effective.
