The compartmentalized method is how I stay honest about what I actually evaluated on a job. If I start at the equipment pad because the water is too cold to get in first, I finish the equipment pad before I get in. I do not start pressure testing, find a pressure drop on the return line, and then skip the dive because "I already found it." Maybe I found one of two leaks. Maybe the pressure drop was a test error. The dive still happens.

The rule is simple and it does not change: finish the box you are in. Do not think about the next one. Do not think about the next appointment. Stay in the compartment you are working in until every required check inside it is done. Then move to the next one.

When I find something early, I note it, photograph it, and move on. I come back to it at the end with fresh attention and more time. That return visit is almost always more productive than if I had stayed on it immediately. The mental reset that comes from completing the method first means I am looking at the finding with cleaner judgment -- not with two hours of emotional investment already locked into it being the answer.
