New technicians do not automatically learn leak detection just by watching. The Five Training Stages
Observation
The trainee watches full jobs and learns the complete flow: customer greeting, water-loss questions, pool and equipment review, visual inspection, dye testing, tool setup, photo documentation, customer explanation, and report notes. At this stage, the trainee is learning the pattern before making any decisions.
Low-Risk Field Tasks
The trainee begins with lower-risk support work: tool setup and restocking, water-level notes, photo documentation, basic visual observations, equipment pad note-taking, skimmer observation support, and customer history intake support. These tasks build discipline and field habit without giving the trainee decision authority too early.
Guided Testing
The trainee performs selected tests under direct supervision -- dye testing, visual checks, simple system observations, basic tool handling, line identification support, and draft report notes. The supervisor explains what each result does and does not prove. This is where the technician learns to interpret, not just operate.
Judgment Practice
The trainee reviews real cases and answers questions: What is confirmed? What is suspected? What is not tested? What is inaccessible? What would you test next? What should you not say to the customer yet? When should you call the supervisor? When is destructive access not justified? How do you explain a no-leak-found result? This stage prevents tool overconfidence and builds honest diagnostic thinking.
Supervised Lead Work
The trainee leads simpler jobs while the supervisor reviews photos, videos, test notes, report wording, customer explanation, repair recommendation, and follow-up plan. The trainee does not move into harder work because time has passed -- they move forward when their judgment is consistent.
Tiered Decision Authority
Not all decisions belong to a new technician. The company should clearly define what a trainee can do independently versus what requires supervisor review.

A new technician needs to understand why we stop when we find something. Finding a leak does not end the inspection. We note it and keep going. Patch last. A trainee who does not know that rule will confirm the first leak and walk away -- and miss a second one. That is a callback. And the customer blames the company, not the trainee.
The tiered escalation model is the key. Until a technician has shown consistent judgment on the easy calls, they do not get to make the hard ones. Pressure-test conclusions, underground break calls, excavation recommendations -- those stay with the supervisor until the technician earns them. That protects the customer and the reputation.
