Why Suction-Side Leaks Behave Differently
The suction side of a pool plumbing system is under negative pressure -- vacuum -- when the pump runs. This is the opposite of the pressure side. On the suction side, the pump is pulling water toward itself, creating a partial vacuum in the lines between the pool and the pump inlet.

Intermittent Pump Prime Loss
The pump struggles to maintain consistent flow, runs rough, or loses prime periodically -- especially at startup or after the system has been off. Air in the suction line prevents the pump from establishing a solid water column.
Gurgling or Sucking Sounds
Gurgling, sucking, or irregular sound from the pump or suction lines. The pump is processing a mix of air and water rather than pure water, producing characteristic sound changes at the equipment pad.
Strainer Basket Partially Air-Filled
When the pump is running, the strainer basket -- visible through the pump's clear lid if equipped -- should be full of water. Partial air in the strainer basket indicates air is entering the suction line upstream of the pump.
Water Loss That Stabilizes at a Specific Level

Skimmer Throat
The skimmer throat is one of the most commonly skipped evaluation points. A separation between the skimmer body and the pool shell allows air to enter the suction at the throat level when the water drops to that point.
Skimmer Body Cracks
Cracks in the skimmer body, particularly around the throat and where the skimmer attaches to the pool structure, can admit air to the suction system while the pool water level is above the crack.
Pump Lid and O-Ring
A worn or improperly seated pump lid O-ring allows air to enter directly at the strainer basket. This is an equipment pad source -- not an underground one -- and is typically identified by air in the basket.
Suction Line Unions and Fittings
Unions in the suction line between the pool and the pump, particularly if they are above the water line or degraded, can admit air. A fitting that seeps water when the pump is off may draw air when the pump is running.
Underground Suction Line Break
A break in an underground suction pipe can draw air if the break is above the water table and above the hydraulic pressure line at that point in the suction run.
Equalizer Line
