Pool Leak Detection During Tropical Rainstorms and High Winds

The answer is simple: reschedule. No leak is worth a technician's safety - and bad weather makes every result less reliable anyway.

Pool leak detection should not be performed during lightning, active rainstorms, tropical weather, or unsafe wind conditions. Pool leak detection involves water, electrical equipment, slippery surfaces, underwater work, pressure testing, and field tools - all of which become more dangerous in bad weather. Heavy rain disrupts dye testing, adds water to the pool that masks loss rates, makes decks slippery, reduces visibility, and creates conditions where results cannot be trusted. The correct response to a weather-affected job is to reschedule. A written stop-work weather policy removes pressure from the technician to make that decision in real time.

LBA field policy: We do not perform pool leak evaluations in lightning, active storms, unsafe wind conditions, or poor visibility. There is no exception based on customer pressure or scheduling urgency. The job gets rescheduled. The customer is better served by a reliable result in safe conditions than by a compromised evaluation done under weather pressure.

Why Weather Stops the Job

Pool leak detection involves water entry, equipment pads with live electrical systems, and outdoor work on exposed sites. Lightning in the area is not a manageable risk. Any indication of lightning within the area stops all work immediately - including any underwater evaluation, equipment pad work, or ground-level activity near the pool.

Rain disrupts dye testing

Dye testing requires calm water. Rain introduces surface turbulence that disperses dye without indicating a leak. A dye test performed in rain produces a meaningless result - and a result the technician cannot stand behind.

Rain adds water to the pool

Water loss comparison - including the bucket test - depends on the pool and the test container losing water at the same rate to the same weather. Heavy rain adds water to both and disrupts any measurement in progress. A water loss observation that was reliable before a rainstorm is invalid once rain begins.

High winds affect acoustic work and visibility

Wind over an acoustic sensor produces low-frequency noise that can mask leak signals. High winds also create surface water movement in the pool that disrupts underwater evaluation. Wind-driven debris on the deck and in the water creates additional hazards.

Slippery deck surfaces increase fall risk

Travertine, pavers, and concrete pool decks become significantly more slippery when wet. A technician carrying equipment, moving around a pool, or leaning to access fittings on a wet deck is at elevated fall risk that does not exist in dry conditions.

Written Stop-Work Weather Policy - What to Include

A written policy removes the real-time decision pressure. When the policy exists in writing, the technician is following procedure - not making an arbitrary call in front of a frustrated customer. That makes the conversation easier, protects the technician, and produces better results when the job gets done in the right conditions.
