Water loss only when the pump runs. Plumbing lines all pass pressure testing. The answer is often flowing out the waste pipe -- visible in two minutes if you know where to look.
Learn the H.U.N.T.E.R. Method →The clearest sign of a hidden multi-port valve leak is water flowing from the waste line discharge point while the valve is set to filter and the pump is running. Other signs include unexplained water loss only during pump operation, plumbing circuits that all pass pressure testing, debris returning to the pool through the returns, stiff or difficult handle movement, water around the valve body, or water loss that stops completely when the waste port is capped. The valve must be checked before any underground plumbing is investigated.
Water flowing from the waste outlet while the valve is set to filter. The most direct confirmation -- run the pump and check the discharge point.
Pool holds water overnight with pump off. Level drops consistently during pump operation. Loss stops when pump stops.
Return lines, skimmer lines, main drain, and cleaner lines all hold pressure. The pipe circuits are intact -- the problem is in the valve, not the pipe.
Filter media (sand, DE) returning to the pool can indicate internal bypass -- water moving past the filter media through a failed valve diverter.
A handle that is hard to turn, sticks between positions, or does not lock cleanly may indicate a worn diverter, broken spring, or debris inside the valve body.
Moisture at the valve lid, around the shaft, or pooling at the base of the valve indicates a cover O-ring, shaft O-ring, or valve body failure.
Unusually low filter pressure may indicate water bypassing the filter entirely. High pressure followed by sudden drops may indicate partial blockage from internal debris.
If temporarily capping the waste port stops the water loss, that confirms the loss is through the valve to waste -- not through underground plumbing.
A multi-port valve routes water between different circuits -- filter, backwash, rinse, waste, recirculate, and closed -- using a diverter turned by the handle. The spider gasket seals each port when the diverter is in position. When the spider gasket wears, tears, or is contaminated with sand or debris, water can bypass the seal and travel from the filter circuit into the waste port even while the handle is set to filter.
The leak does not appear at the pad because the water exits through the waste pipe, which may discharge at the street, in a drain, or in a landscaped area away from the equipment. It is invisible unless the technician physically follows the waste pipe and checks the discharge during pump operation.
Follow the waste pipe from the valve to its discharge point. Set the valve to filter. Start the pump. Go to the discharge point and observe. Any water flowing from the waste outlet while the valve is set to filter confirms the valve is leaking internally to waste. Document the flow and photograph the discharge point.
Confirm that the pool holds its water level when the pump is off overnight and loses water during pump operation. If the waste discharge is active during pump operation and the loss pattern matches, the valve is confirmed as the source.
With the pump off and pressure relieved, inspect the valve handle seating, lid O-ring, shaft area, and body for moisture, cracks, or debris. Internal inspection requires disassembly -- spider gasket condition, diverter seating, and debris inside the body are the primary findings.
Plumbing pressure tests isolate specific pipe circuits -- return lines, skimmer lines, main drain. The multi-port valve is either upstream of the test or excluded. The pipe circuits are completely intact, so they hold pressure correctly. The valve failure only produces water loss under operational conditions with the pump running and water moving through it. A static test of isolated pipe circuits will never reveal a valve that bleeds to waste during pump operation.
Ask whether loss only occurs when the pump runs. Pump-on-only loss always puts valve and equipment pad on the suspect list before underground plumbing.
Map the full equipment pad including the multi-port valve, waste line routing, and discharge point. Know where water would go if the valve fails.
Trace the waste line. Run the pump. Check the discharge. This two-minute observation narrows the source before any pressure testing begins.
Active waste discharge during filter operation is the primary confirmation. Cap the waste port as a secondary confirmation if needed.
Document the discharge rate, valve position, pump operation state, and water loss correlation. Photograph the discharge point during pump operation.
Repair or replace the valve. Confirm no waste discharge after repair. Verify pool water level stabilizes during pump operation.
