How to Prove Water Loss Is From a Landscape Irrigation Line Near the Pool Deck

Wet ground near a pool is not proof of a pool leak. Separate the two systems, show the pattern to the client, and refer to an irrigation contractor when the evidence points there.

Proving that water loss near a pool deck is coming from a landscape irrigation line rather than the pool requires systematically separating the two systems and building a pattern of evidence the client can understand. A wet area near the pool deck could come from pool plumbing, pool structure, equipment leaks, irrigation, drainage, groundwater, or rainwater. The technician should test the pool system fully first - water loss rate, equipment evaluation, plumbing pressure testing where indicated - then observe how the wet area relates to irrigation schedule timing, irrigation zone activation, and water meter movement. If pool testing shows no significant loss and the wet area appears consistently after irrigation runs, the pattern supports an irrigation source. Recommend an irrigation contractor when the evidence points outside the pool.

Why Wet Ground Is Not Enough Evidence

A wet area near the pool is observed by the customer and assumed to be a pool problem. But water in the ground near a pool could come from any number of sources - and blaming irrigation without evidence creates a problem if the pool is actually leaking.

The professional approach is to test the pool system fully first, then compare the wet-area behavior to the irrigation schedule. The evidence builds the conclusion.

Test the pool system first - completely

Track the pool water loss rate with autofill isolated. Evaluate pool equipment and visible plumbing. Pressure test any suspect pool lines. If the pool shows significant loss beyond evaporation, the pool is a leak source regardless of what the irrigation system does. Do not skip the pool evaluation because the irrigation seems like the obvious answer.

Compare wet-area timing to irrigation schedule

Ask the customer when irrigation runs - what days, what times, which zones. Then ask when the wet area appears most noticeably. If wet areas appear consistently within hours after irrigation and diminish between irrigation cycles, that timing pattern supports irrigation as a source. If the area is wet regardless of irrigation schedule, irrigation alone is not a sufficient explanation.

Watch the water meter

If a water meter is accessible, observe it when irrigation is running and when it is not. Unexpectedly high meter movement during irrigation periods supports a leak in the irrigation system. This is an observation the technician can note - not a diagnosis - and it gives the irrigation contractor a useful starting point.

Pool holds but ground is still wet

If pool pressure testing and water loss observation show no significant loss beyond evaporation, and the wet area still appears - especially in correlation with irrigation timing - the source is almost certainly not the pool. Document the pool testing result, document the timing observation, and recommend an irrigation contractor evaluation.

Do not blame irrigation unless the evidence supports it. A technician who tells a customer "the pool is fine, it's your irrigation" without adequately testing the pool has created a problem if the pool is actually leaking. Test the pool thoroughly first. Then let the pattern speak for itself. The client gets a complete picture - what was evaluated, what was found, and where the remaining questions point - rather than a guess.
