How Do You Explain an Underground Pool Leak to a Customer?

Water does not always surface directly above the break. Explain what that means, why wet spots are clues not proof, and never overpromise underground accuracy.

Underground pool leaks require clear explanation of why the visible evidence - a wet spot, soft ground, or settled deck - is a clue and not a confirmed location. Water escaping from buried plumbing travels through soil, along pipe trenches, and toward the lowest accessible point before surfacing, which means the visible symptom may appear far from the actual break. Customers need to understand that testing identifies which line is leaking and narrows the area as much as conditions allow, but that exact failure location is often confirmed after excavation begins. Why Underground Leaks Are Not "X Marks the Spot"

Customers often expect that if there is a wet spot in the yard or a soft area near the pool, the leak must be directly underneath it. That is not how underground water movement works.

Water escaping from a buried pipe under pressure follows the path of least resistance. It travels through soil, along the original pipe trench, through voids, under pavers, or toward the lowest point it can reach - which may be well away from where the pipe actually failed. By the time water appears at the surface, it may have traveled several feet in any direction from the break.

Explaining underground water movement to a customer

"When water escapes from a pipe underground, it does not always come straight up. It can travel through the soil, follow the trench the pipe was installed in, or move toward the lowest area it can find before showing up at the surface. So the wet spot you see in the yard is a clue that something nearby is leaking - but it is not always directly above the break. Our testing tells us which pipe line is losing pressure. Then we use sound equipment or trace gas to narrow down the area as much as possible before any digging happens."

What Testing Can and Cannot Tell the Customer

Never tell a customer "I know exactly where it is" before the pipe is exposed. Underground accuracy depends on soil conditions, pipe depth, leak size, pressure, and acoustic conditions on that specific day. The honest answer is a suspected area based on testing - not a marked spot that guarantees one dig will find the break. Overpromising accuracy creates disputes when the first excavation does not land on the exact failure point.

How to Set Accurate Expectations

"Based on our pressure testing and listening work, the suspected area is in this general zone - roughly here to here. The repair contractor will open the deck or ground in this area and should locate the break within that range. Underground work involves some variables we cannot fully control until the pipe is exposed. If the first opening does not land directly on it, a short extension of the dig should reach it."
