Do Pool Leak Detectors Need to Dive?

The short answer is yes - if you want to do the job right. Here is what getting in the water actually means for this profession.

Pool leak detection requires the ability to enter the water to properly evaluate lights, drains, fittings, skimmer throats, tile lines, and underwater shell areas. While not every pool requires a full dive on every visit, technicians who avoid the water entirely will miss leak sources that are only visible or testable underwater. Safety conditions including lightning, electrical hazards, poor water chemistry, and unsafe sites are valid reasons to stop a dive, but they are not reasons to build a business model around avoiding the water.

What Getting in the Water Actually Means

There is a difference between a company that evaluates a pool from the deck and one that actually gets in and looks at every area that can lose water. That difference matters when you are trying to find a leak and not guess at one.

Lights, drains, floor fittings, skimmer throats, tile lines, wet niches, and return fittings are all potential leak points. Many of them require being underwater to see clearly, test with dye, or evaluate properly. You cannot do that from the deck.

That does not mean you dive blindly into every pool regardless of conditions. Safety comes first. But if your business model is built around never getting wet, you are going to miss things - and you will be charging customers for an incomplete evaluation.

When Diving Is Necessary

Some areas of a pool cannot be properly evaluated without getting in the water:

In many cases, an underwater observation changes the entire direction of a field evaluation. A crack that looks cosmetic from above may show active dye pull when viewed up close underwater. A light niche that looks dry from the deck may have active movement when tested properly.

When Not to Dive

Knowing when to stop is just as important as knowing when to get in. Do not enter the water if any of the following apply:

Field reality: A technician who can clearly explain why conditions prevented a dive is more credible than one who skips the water and never mentions it. Document the reason. Communicate it to the customer. Offer to return when conditions allow.

What a Mask and Snorkel Can Accomplish

Most pool leak evaluations do not require scuba or breathing equipment. A mask, snorkel, and fins are enough for the majority of residential pools. The water is shallow, the work is focused, and the time in the water is often short.

The goal is visual access to the areas that cannot be seen from above, combined with dye testing at specific locations. That does not require a long dive. It requires getting in, moving methodically through the evaluation, and documenting what you find.

For deeper commercial pools, pools with unusual construction, or pools with suspected drain or fitting issues at depth, the evaluation may require more time or different equipment. That is a field judgment call based on what the job actually needs.
