A commercial overflow system is a connected water system with multiple components that can each lose water independently. The diagnostic principle is division -- not investigation of the whole system as one mystery body of water.

The Eight-Step Field Isolation Process
Separate Static and Operating Conditions
Ask whether the system loses water when off, when running, or both. Commercial gutter systems can lose water from actual leaks, splashout, evaporation, wind, autofill masking, surge tank overflow, backwash valve bypass, waste-line loss, or level control problems. Static testing and operating testing may show completely different results.
Isolate and Flood the Gutter
Turn off the valve to the gutter line. Flood the gutter trough with water. Leave the gutter isolated from the rest of the system. Watch whether the gutter water level drops over time. If the isolated gutter drops, the leak is in the gutter trough itself, a gutter fitting, a joint, or a connected section that was not fully isolated. If the gutter holds, the loss is elsewhere.
Pressure Test the Gutter Line
The gutter drain line can be pressure tested like any other plumbing line. Confirm which gutter openings connect to the line, verify the circuit is fully isolated, verify plugs are holding, and that valves are sealing. Once isolated, apply controlled pressure and read the gauge using normal pressure-test logic.
Listen at Each Gutter Opening
A small microphone or acoustic probe placed at each opening in the gutter system can help compare sound levels between openings. This may help identify which area or branch shows stronger leak evidence -- particularly useful when multiple gutter openings feed the same line and the pressure test result points to a specific section.
Use a Pipe Camera When Separation Is Suspected
A pipe camera may reveal pipe separation, offset joints, broken fittings, cracked lines, or dropped pipes in gutter plumbing that is accessible. Gutter piping can separate from the pool wall if the main line drops or shifts. A camera is not always necessary, but it is valuable when the pressure test result suggests physical pipe separation rather than a joint or fitting leak.
Isolate the Surge Tank
Plug all lines going into the surge tank. Plug all lines going out of the surge tank. Mark the water level clearly. Leave the tank isolated and undisturbed. Continue checking the pool shell, gutter, and equipment. Return to the tank later and check whether the marked water level has dropped. This separates surge tank loss from every other component in the system.
Inspect the Surge Tank
The surge tank may leak at wall cracks, floor cracks, pipe penetrations, tank joints, waterproofing failures, fittings, drains, overflow lines, access openings, or structural seams. Use the hydrophone where accessible. Dye test suspect areas around penetrations. Document water level, conditions, and any visible defects.
Check Equipment and Waste Lines
Commercial systems can lose significant water through equipment problems that look like structural leaks. Check backwash valves, the waste line, autofill function, overflow discharge, surge tank makeup water system, level controllers, valves that do not fully close, and any bypass lines. Do not attribute loss to the pool shell until equipment sources have been eliminated.

This is primarily an Understand and Narrow problem. The commercial gutter system must be fully understood before any testing begins. The technician narrows the leak by dividing the system rather than investigating it as one connected body of water.
Ask about system design, operating history, whether autofill is on, and whether the loss occurs running or static.
Map the entire system before testing anything. Pool, gutter, gutter line, surge tank, and all equipment plumbing.
Isolate each section. Gutter separate from pool. Tank separate from both. Equipment checked last.
Flood the isolated gutter. Pressure test the gutter line. Mark and watch the surge tank level separately.
Use acoustic probe at gutter openings. Dye test tank penetrations. Camera the gutter line when separation is suspected.
Report which component lost water, which were clear, and which could not be fully tested due to facility constraints.
The principle on a commercial gutter pool is the same as any other leak detection job -- divide and test. The difference is the scale and the number of components. Treating the whole system as one body of water produces nothing useful. Dividing it into the pool, gutter, gutter line, surge tank, and equipment produces answers.
Turn off the autofill before you start water-loss testing on any commercial pool. That is rule one. If the autofill is running, you cannot measure what the system is losing. You can only measure what the autofill is adding.
The surge tank is the component that gets skipped the most. Plug all the lines in and out, mark the level, leave it alone, and come back. If it drops while isolated, you have your answer on that section. Simple logic. Systematic execution.
